Raheem Morris and His Eighty Buccaneer Children

Tom EdringtonJun 21, 2009

Okay Tampa Bay Buccaneers—whose your daddy?

Raheem Morris says that, in a way, he is.

"It's like having 80 kids," Morris said at the conclusion of last week's minicamp.

It was the last formal get-together for Morris and his kids before they report for camp on July 31.

It can be a nervous time for NFL teams as young men with too much money have more free time on their hands than usual.

Many of Morris' "kids" have pretty good allowances such as Kellen Winslow Jr. and Michael Clayton.

The new "kid" who will soon have a pretty good allowance is first-round pick Josh Freeman, who is obviously one of Morris' favorites.

The "kids" have roughly 40 days off now. The smart ones will continue to work, knowing that most positions are up for grabs at One Buccaneer Place come August 1.

For General Manager Mark Dominik, it's time to get to work and get Freeman and the other draft picks under contract. Along with Freeman, third-round pick Roy Miller of Texas, defensive end Kyle Moore from USC, and seventh-round pick E.J. Biggars are awaiting their contract negotiations.

Seventh-round pick Sammy Stroughter is signed and the team said farewell by releasing free agents Amarri Jackson, Jamall Johnson, and Evan McCollough.

Morris and his staff will be busy over the next 40 days making sure they have the right 80 players coming to camp. They will also be working on a mental depth chart so to speak.

The most interesting topic for the Bucs will be the quarterback depth chart and where Morris' "favorite son" Freeman fits.

40 days of work and contemplation.

Happy Father's Day, Raheem!
