Masters 2014 Tee Times: Pairings and Predictions for Friday

One round in, the Masters is already becoming more unpredictable than the NCAA tournament.

Show of hands, who had Bill Haas as the clubhouse leader after Round 1?

Who would have backed him, given his previous history in the first round of major tournaments, per ESPN's Justin Ray:

The 31-year-old shot a four-under through the first 18 holes, building a one-shot lead over Adam Scott, Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen. Watson was one of the last golfers to finish up, and it looked like he may earn at least a tie with Haas. He failed to build on his birdies on 13 and 15.

Of course, you never want to read too much into one round, especially the first of a major tournament. The leaderboard will no doubt look much different over the course of the next three days.

Scott will no doubt be one of the stars to watch on Friday. Nobody has repeated at the Masters since Tiger Woods went back to back in 2001 and '02.

Some may consider winning two years in a row to be a massive mental hurdle, adding to the normally difficult task of simply taming Augusta.

The legendary Jack Nicklaus, however, argued the opposite, per Australian television presenter Mark Beretta:

Nicklaus should know. He repeated in 1965 and '66 and finished in a tie for second in '64, which would've capped off a four-peat.

Rather than getting overwhelmed by expectations, Scott has been emboldened by the fact that he's already been there, done that and gotten the jacket to prove it.

"In a sense, winning last year took the pressure off," he said, per the Associated Press, via FoxSports.com. "What's the worst that can happen? I'm still a Masters champion."

The lone blemish on Scott's first round was a double bogey on No. 12. If he stays out of the water there, he's probably sitting atop the leaderboard. That's how slim the margins can be.

Scott will find his way back to the top. By the end of Round 2, the 33-year-old will be the leader heading into the weekend.

The current leader, Haas, will likely fall by the wayside. He doesn't have a great record at Augusta, never finishing higher than 20th. In fact, Thursday was the first time he'd ever shot under 70 in a round:

In order to hold his lead, Haas will likely have to shoot each round under 70. Given his previous Masters results, it seems an unrealistic expectation.

Haas looks to have peaked a little too early.

You see this every year. Somebody comes from out of nowhere to take an early lead at the Masters, only to then struggle in subsequent rounds.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Ben Crenshaw in 1984 was the last golfer to win after grabbing a first-round lead:

Lurking a little further down the leaderboard is Rory McIlroy. The two-time major champion shot a respectable one-under in the first round, which puts him in a tie for 11th.

McIlroy looks set to make a surge on Friday. Although he's three strokes back of Haas, the 24-year-old is generally strong in the second round at Augusta. In the last three years, he's never posted a score higher than 70.

As The Telegraph's Paul Hayward pointed out, McIlroy looked very good off the tee. His biggest problem is that he hasn't yet gotten a proper read of the fairways. McIlroy should figure that out by tomorrow:

You have to wonder when Rory is finally going to figure out Augusta. His Masters history is littered with disappointment, whether it's him missing the cut in 2010, a final-round 80 in 2011, a 77 and 76 over the final two rounds in 2012 or last year's 79 in the third round.

Sooner or later, he's gonna put it all together, right? With no Tiger coupled together with the poor performances of Phil Mickelson and Jason Day, this is as good of a time as any for McIlroy. The path won't be much clearer than it is now.

It feels like we say this every year, but 2014 looks to be Rory McIlroy's best chance to win a green jacket and shut up a large number of his critics.
