Line In The Sand: D-Day For '09-'10 Blazers Squad

Greg WoodJun 18, 2009

I know, I know... The title is a little dramatic, however in reality it's not far from the truth. Based on the last few offseasons, GM Kevin Pritchard has shaped his team for the upcoming season entirely around the draft, and from there tinkering ever so slightly before the start of the season. Seeing as this year the Blazers have a plethora of draft picks and capable players with decent trade value, it's anyone's guess at how it plays out.

The one thing that needs to be avoided this year, at all costs is trading depth for a veteran with a large salary.... Unless that veteran is Steve Nash. Nash would be the perfect piece in this ever growing jigsaw, which (knock on wood!!!) could turn out looking like the Mona Lisa when all is said and done. Think about it. Pure point guard who is not selfish and able to get the ball up and down the court, making others around him better. Nash can also be a great asset in the sense that he can build the confidence of Greg Oden by getting him the ball in good spots near the basket. Sure, a lot of that comes down to Greg and how hard he works, but it always seemed that at times last year it was hard getting him the ball in place for easy buckets.

Getting Nash would also in a way be like adding another coach. Nash has played with some great players and on some great teams. In some ways his career represents what its like to have been a Blazers' fan post '77 Championship team. So close, time and time again. Just when we think we are going to get over the hump, the other shoe drops. Phoenix is now a shell of the teams that were the racing up and down the court lighting the scoreboard up, only a couple of seasons ago, and everyone knows it. They are going to try and rebuild, clean house, and rely on youth to get the franchise going again... Cue Kevin Pritchard.

Wouldn't it make sense (without looking at the fine print of the contracts) to send Travis Outlaw, Jarryd Bayless, multiple draft picks this year and next, and cash, for Steve Nash and a consideration? I mean Phoenix gets what they want (a small forward who can score, and another pure scorer in Bayless), more draft picks and an undisclosed amount of cash (it would have to be a lot to make the trade work) to ease the financial strain on the team over at least the next season. And, Portland gets what they want. A point guard who can lead the team, take the pressure of Brandon, get the ball to Greg, play the high screen a role with LA, etc. etc. etc.

If this happens I can see a rejuvenation in Nash's career, a la one Charles Barkley back in the mid 90's when he went to Phoenix, won an MVP and almost a title before retiring. Nash coming into a young team with that chip on his shoulder of being so close would show the young guys the hunger they need to posses in order to win in the postseason. The Blazers would also be able to shed two of their decent young Blazers' and put them in a situation where they can shine too. All in all it works out great for everyone.

RIP CITY!
