Lidstrom…Not Such a Big Deal!

GoucheJun 15, 2009

Unlike some of his teammates Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom didn’t think that Sidney Crosby meant anything personal by his actions. A day after the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup with a 2-1 game seven victory in Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, all the talk coming from the Detroit camp was about how Pens’ captain Sidney Crosby didn’t shake Lindstrom’s hand. Minutes after the final buzzer sounded Lidstrom along with a handful of teammates were still waiting to shake Crosby’s hand before finally giving up and leaving the ice. “You know you’re happy and celebrating with your teammates,” Lidstrom, who is a four- time Stanley Cup winner said of the emotions that go with winning a Stanley Cup. “But you know the losing team wants to get off the ice too. Sidney was probably caught up in the emotions and everything.”

On Monday when the Penguins held their Stanley Cup victory parade Crosby gave no apologies for being a little late in joining the hand shaking line. Even though he eventually got into line and shook hands with the remaining Detroit players, a couple of the Wings who were already in the dressing room voiced their displeasure with Crosby taking his time and not shaking fellow captain Lindstrom’’s hand immediately after the game. “I think that’s one thing you should do,” Wings veteran forward Henrik Zetterberg said. “I don’t know why he didn’t do it, it’s disrespectful.” Crosby who is only 21 insisted that he was just celebrating with his teammates and didn’t mean anything disrespectful in missing the opportunity to shake Lindstrom’s hand. Both will have a chance to iron things out next Thursday when they see each other at the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas. The number one question with the Red Wings heading into the off season revolves around free agent forward Marian Hossa who struggled badly during the finals. This 40-goal scorer who only registered three assists during the finals expressed his desire to remain in Detroit. “Detroit is number one on my list,” Hossa who scored six playoff goals said. “I had a great time in here with these people and I don’t regret anything. My agent Rich (Winter) and Kenny (Red Wings’ general manager Ken Holland) will sit down and talk about some stuff.”
