Brown VS. Faber Fight: Post Thoughts

Brian BemisJun 15, 2009

The fight begins. Punches are thrown. An immediate posture change is noticed.

Any Mike Brown fans wouldn't have seen the change in Faber's defense tactics, but very few Faber fans were not wondering what in the world was happening.

Announcers state they believe Faber won the first round with speed and hits.  Round two pretty much no hits and nothing but elbows. It was very apparent not only to the announcers, but to Brown himself that Faber was injured.

Have your every started an online computer game and half way through you quit it because your score wasn't what you wanted?  I have done this hundreds of times and I am wondering if it would have been better for Faber to throw in the towel.

Now, don't throw rocks at me just yet.  Given how the fight ended I personally believe the outcome could have been different given both fighters having two working hands.

I am not trying to take anything away from Mike Brown.  He did win fair and square  however, he didn't finish an injured man.  He was not able to submit an injured man.  He was stronger in certain positions, but he did not finish the fight in convincing fashion for me. Faber actually came closer to a submission than Brown in my opinion.

Faber had an answer for everything Brown brought to him with one working hand. I personally believe that if Faber had not been injured he would have submitted Brown with the choke.  However, he could not hold on because of his broken hand.

So, back to my question. Have you every stopped a game and then restarted it to get a better hand (no pun intended).  I think it would have been better long term for Faber to throw in the towel.  Now that it went five rounds they will be less likely to book that fight again for some time.

Yeah, the fans like warriors and they wanted to see the fight, but as fans do we want to see someone fighting for the title and they are injured?  Do we want our favorite fighters to think long term or do we want to just watch the fight no matter how it affects their records.

It was nice to see the war, but I feel like I left the tube with many unanswered questions. I just think what if Faber had even three rounds of a good hand.  Would he have won those rounds as well?  Would Brown have hunted him down and knocked him out?  Does it really matter, but Brown would have got the decision anyway if Faber hadn't submitted him or knocked Brown out.

These questions are just nagging at me and I don't like fights to end this way especially when the win was not what I call an overwhelming and convincing win for Brown.

Now, the chance of us seeing them anytime soon to do a three peat is probably not in the cards.  That bums me out as a MMA fan because in my heart of hearts I believe Faber could have pulled off the win given five full rounds with both hands working.

Brown is a strong tough fighter.  But did he get lucky the first fight and did his luck carry on to this fight?
