Williams Is Cowboy's & East's #1 WR

Tony DeRosaJun 12, 2009

From the day Mr. Owens was released all we have been hearing is media, former players, and fans questioning whether Roy Williams is a number one WR.  Well I am here to tell you that not only is he the #1 WR for th Cowboys but, he is arguably the best wide-out in the NFC East.

Now I know some of your jaws just dropped but, lets look at this rationally team by team.  I will focus on each of the players previous couple seasons to get a better sense of their ability. First let us look at the NY Giants.  Their top two WRsSteve Smith and Domenik Hixon don't even have two years to look at.  Last year Smith had 57 catches with 1 TD and Hixon had 43 catches with 2 TDs.  Those are solid numbers for a number 2 or 3 WR and that is what they played mostly last year.  I think we saw late last year how much easier it was to defend them with those guys on the field and they even had Toomer still.  While I think they are nice complimentary WRs, they are far from being a true number one wideout.  I don't want hear anything about the rookie WRs Nicks and Barden either.  Very seldomly do rookie wide-outs turn into #1 WRs in their first season.  Just ask the Redskins how Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelley turned out last year.

Let us move on to the Eagles WRs now.  Philly actually does have a nice pair of starting wide outs.  However, calling either of them a true #1 WR is a stretch.  Jackson had a very nice rookie season last year with 62 catches and 2 TDs.  He should probably improve some this year but, his size will most likely keep him from being a true #1 wide-out.  Especially when it comes to his TD production.  Curtis was banged up last year so we will go back to 2008.  He had a very nice year with 77 catches and 6 TDs.  Those represent numbers that could be #1 WR material.  However, those were by far his best stats and he just doesn't look the part at all.  With addition of Maclin they should  have a nice wide-out core but, nobody that can just dominate another team and draw double coverage.

Now it is time to analyze Redskin receivers.  Washington is the one team that can say they have a number one wide-out and I can go for that.  Moss has put together some very nice numbers in his 8 year career with one exceptional year in 2005 in his first year with Washington.  Since that year he only has one more 1000 yard receiving year which makes 3 in 8 years.  He did have nice bounce back year last year with 79 catches and 6 TDs.  However, he is going into his 9th year and has had some injury issues the last couple of them.  He has usually managed to play through them mostly but, being a smaller WR his game is based a lot on speed and quickness.  So that has made his ability to make plays in those games significantly less.  While I would call Moss a legit #1 still, I think his days are numbered at this point in his career.  Antwaan Randle El is a very nice #3 WR and that is it.  2nd round picks Thomas and Kelly showed basically nothing in their rookie seasons last year.

Finally, lets take a look at the Cowboy wide-outs.  At this point their is nobody else really worth mentioning except Roy Williams.  There is couple guys that look the part on the team but, are far from proving it.  It is kind of hard to get a true reading on Williams in his half season with the the Cowboys due to TO being there and learning a new offense mid-season.  So I will look at his last two years with the Lions.  In 2006 he had his breakout year with 82 rec, 1310 yards and 7 TDs.  That being his 3rd year in the league is not surprising being a WR.  His first two years he nice TD amounts with 8 in each but, his total receptions were modest being in the 40s and 50s.  His 2007 season numbers are down compared to his breakout 2006 season ones.  However, not because he didn't perform at a high level again.  They were down because he missed the final 4 games of the season.  Through the first twelve games he totaled 63 rec, 836 yards and 5 TDs.  If you project those numbers out for a full season he would have approximately 84 catches, 1112 yards and 7 TDs.  Hid TDs and catches are right their with his breakout pro bowl season of 2006.  His yards are a little down but, you can attribute some of that to the 2007 season being Calvin Johnson's rookie year.  So over a two year period that would be 166 catches, 2422 yards and 14 TDs.  I am guessing that 83 catches, 1211 yards and 7 TDs this season would have Cowboy fans/coaches elated and would rate Williams as the BEST WR in the NFC East.
