Five Recent College Football Players Who Disappointed Us

Mitch WilsonJun 11, 2009

While my recent article about possible disappointments for the upcoming College Football season wasn't well received by anyone, I always try and be as honest and objective as I can be.

While that article was just speculation, there is going to be little to argue with in the following list, the recent College Football disappointments.

While every team has players who have more expected of them than others, these are the players who the nation looked upon as the next big thing.

They only thing they were big at were disappointing their fans.

1. Kyle Wright, QB, Miami 2004-2007

Kyle Wright arrived at Miami with a lot of fan fare as he was the heir apparent and the next great one to play at "Quarterback U."

Wright was the Super Prep player of the Year, the Gatorade Player of the Year, played in the Army All-American game, and was widely considered one of the top players in the country.

For whatever reason, Wright never led Miami to as much as a BCS Bowl game and was never the star most expected.

In 2006 Kyle Wright was second to Calvin Johnson as the Preseason ACC Player of the Year, by the start of the 2007 season he had lost his starting job to Kirby Freeman.

2. Hunter Cantwell, QB, Louisville, 2005-2008

While Cantwell didn't have any expectations when he walked on at Louisville, that all changed when Brian Brohm went down with a leg injury and Cantwell immediately looked like he had all the makings of a star.

By the end of the 2005 season, Cantwell was leading his team to a Gator Bowl berth.

While it was a forgone conclusion that Cantwell was the heir apparent, he never become a star. Instead, Cantwell battled injuries for a year and played horrifically down the stretch the following year as the Cardinal went from National Title contenders to missing a bowl for two consecutive years.

While many thought Cantwell would be a Maxwell or Heisman finalist some day, he ended up being nothing more than an inconsistent, undrafted NFL free agent.

3. Chris Rix, QB, Florida State, 2001-2004

While Rix left FSU with very high standing as far as passing records go, he never got the what Seminole fans want and expect, a National Title.

His losses in big games will always be remembered far more than his wins in New Years Day and beyond bowl games.

To be honest, I think Rix caught a tough break at FSU. He was recruited by Mark Richt while he was the offensive coordinator and instead was stuck with Jeff Bowden when Richt left for Georgia.

4. Vidal Hazelton, WR, USC, 2006-2008 (Now at Cincinnati)

Hazelton arrived at USC as one of the most highly recruited players in the country. He was ranked 15 places above Tim Tebow and well ahead of Taylor Mays, Brandon Spikes, LeSean McCoy among others in this very talented class.

Hazelton barely saw the field as a freshman playing in just two games.

While Hazelton's Sophomore season was decent, he was injured in the first game of 2008 and never regained his starting job for the Trojans.

Hazelton's demise ended with him transferring to Cincinnati this past January.

5. Bobby Washington, RB, NC State, 2004-2006

While we can't single handily blame Washington's failure for the firing of former Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato, it certainly didn't help matters.

Washington was originally committed to Miami, was released from his commitment after a change of heart to play for NC State.

Washington never emerged as a star nor even a contributor for the Wolfpack and even tried to switch positions to Safety.

By the end of his Sophomore year, Washington was off to Division 1-AA Eastern Kentucky.
