The Unexpected Off-Day: Time to Look at Six Potential Blue Jay All-Stars!
Marco Scutaro will be on the All-Star Team in July.
We're really sorry at the Cabinet to see that John McDonald didn't get the start last night due to the rainout. But come on, how can you bench leadoff man and starting shortstop Marco Scutaro for even a game? Even though he's started all games, he's hitting .306 and has constantly flirted with the .400 mark when it comes to On Base Percentage at .402 presently. Scutaro has also only committed one error at shortstop in sixty-two games.
Let's look at other Shortstops in the American League and see which ones rank in comparison to Scutaro's unbelievable start, because not a single shortstop in the American League West deserves to be an All-Star. Elvis Andrus? No, he's not been sensational defensively.
1) Tampa Bay's Jason Bartlett- Someone looked in the stats column and saw that Bartlett was off to an incredible start. So now on June 11th, we're going to catch up and see where exactly Bartlett is now. Bartlett had hit .373 in 44 games since going on the Disabled List with a sprained ankle on May 26th, which certainly deserved an all-star nod to that point, but his injury may make way for SCUTAROOOOo!
2) Derek Jeter is the shortstop that leads the voting with over 660,000 votes, but is he having the year that say, Marco Scutaro is having? Well, Jeter is hitting a respectable .295 with 8 homeruns, and also has a beautiful OBP of .370. Clearly, Scutaro is still having the better year, but you know that the 9-TIME All-Star will be starting in St. Louis at this year's midsummer classic.
So hey, it's looking good for Jays fans so far. BACKUP SCUTARO!
AARON HILL AN ALL-STAR?
It's been the decline of the shortstop in 2009, but second base has emerged as a potent offensive position in the Major Leagues. Sluggers like Aaron Hill, Ian Kinsler, Chase Utley (NL), Orlando Hudson (NL) and Dustin Pedroia, the reigning AL MVP of last season all fallen into this category.
For me, it's between Hill and Kinsler for all-star nominations at the 2009 Classic. But Dustin Pedroia is getting votes despite a sort of weak start to the 2009 campaign where his power numbers are way down, despite hitting .310 through 57 games. He has just 2 homeruns and 24 RBIs.
Just take a look at Aaron Hill and Ian Kinsler's numbers:
HILL: .308, 14 HR, 43 RBI
KINSLER: .269, 15HR, 44 RBI
Hill's average is nearly 40 points better than Kinsler's. There's just one problem. Kinsler is so far ahead of Hill in votes that Aaron's really going to struggle to catch up, BUT HE SHOULD BE THE BACKUP.
ADAM LIND, BEST DESIGNATED HITTER IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE
This one is a no-brainer. Adam Lind is going to start at DH for the American League. Look at his numbers:
.315, 12 HR, 45 RBI (top five)
And there's no one close. Big Papi is just south of the Mendoza Line, and Ken Griffey Jr. hasn't exactly had the greatest homecoming. And there's just no one near what Adam Lind has done.
ROY HALLADAY IS GOING TO BE THE AMERICAN LEAGUE STARTING PITCHER.
It doesn't matter if Zach Grienke had incredible months. Roy Halladay is a veteran with real experience and is the best pitcher in the American League hands down at 10-1 and a 2.52 ERA with his last two starts being complete games.
WHO KNOWS- THERE MAY BE OTHER BLUE JAY ALL-STARS..
Scott Downs- 24 games pitched, 2.13 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 8 saves.
Jason Frasor- 4-0, 2.11 ERA, 0.80 WHIP in 22 games.
POTENTIAL FOR THERE TO BE 6 BLUE JAY ALL-STARS!
Jonathan Papelbon is no better: 25 games, 2.08 ERA, 14 saves, 1.38 WHIP
Okajima is no better: 27 games, 2.42 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
Mariano Riveria: 3.20 ERA, 1.11 WHIP
Leading AL Relievers:
Frank Francisco (Rangers), 12 saves, 0.46 ERA...
Darren O'Day (Rangers), 18 games, 1.13 ERA
Well, there's many relievers with incredible numbers this season, and you probably won't see the big names, unless of course, the managers want the big names!
