Missing: Championship Sparkle—Reward for Return

Hayley-L GrahamJun 10, 2009

There is something huge missing in the world of the WWE. What is it exactly?

Heels? Yes. Good storylines? Yes. Quality matches? Yes.

But there is something more essential to the lifeblood that has disappeared over the past few months.

Titles.

Forgettable title reigns, undeserving champions, weak defences, insulting matches. Is that any way to treat what used to be referred to as the ultimate goal in wrestling?

In two months, we have seen almost every title switch hands at least once. In two months, nearly every main eventer has had their turn to play hot potato with every title there is.

What an insult.

Look back to the 1980s. Titles were the things of reverence. Respected and awed at, runs with the title would last months, even years, securing places in wrestling history for those precious few that held them.

Almost every classic match or famous scene from wrestling's past has had the title involved, whether it be the Heavyweight Championship, or the Tag Team belts.

It didn't matter which you held, but if you did, you were the ultimate wrestler, the best at your game and the most deserving guy or girl on the roster.

Look at old Wrestlemania's. Some of the famous matches in its history was for the prestige of the title. The Rock vs Steve Austin—For the title. TLC—For the title. Hogan vs Andre—For the title.

See a theme here?

Zoom ahead nearly 30 years to the present day. What do titles mean now?

Absolute Jack squat.

When was the last time any of the titles held by a wrestler/wrestlers for more than 3 months? Can you remember?

Who were the champions at the beginning of the year? Can you remember?

Exactly.

Every title is being won and lost as quickly as it takes a person to watch the match. There are no longer seen as the ultimate target, but a pass of metal that eventually gets passed to you before being taken away just as fast, like pass the parcel.

Credible champions and explosive storylines are being shunned aside in this new PG world which determines that titles have to change to keep each show interesting.

Any time when a title looks like it is finally clawing its way back into existence, it gets knocked down again, left at the bottom of the pile for another day. For example, Randy Orton, who had a great storyline blossoming with the McMahons and HHH, lost his title after three weeks to an old, injured man who is on his way out.

Mysterio dropped the Intercontinental championship weeks after talking about how proud he was to join the latin heritage associated with it. CM Punk pinned Hardy for the title after a two minute reign.

Where is the credibility in that?

Some titles, like the Women's and Tag Team belts have all but been forgotten, brushed aside in favour of comedy skits and thrown together matches. They never even got a feature at the last Pay Per View.

What sort of legacy does that leave to the historic holders of those titles? It leaves none. It leaves them with less than none. It leaves them with the auspicious honour of being some of the original holders of now worthless belts.

This needs to be sorted out now. WWE need to decide what their titles actually are. Are they a sign of dedication, hard work and respect? Or are they just a 30 pound piece of metal around an old mans waist?
