When Will The NBA Make a Court To Fit The Players?

Tom LaPineJun 9, 2009

The dimensions of the NBA court are too small!

The average height in the NBA is 6'7".  The same as in the 80's, but the new breed of players are thicker and stronger.

The NBA court is 94' long and 50' wide which equals 4700 sq/ft.

The infield alone in MLB is 8100 sq/ft. Average height is 6'1".

An NFL field is 48,000 sq/ft not counting the end-zones. Average height is 6'1".

What does this all mean? I have no idea! But here's my humble opinion of why it is too small.

With the court being 50 feet wide and the three point line is 22 feet from the hoop on the baseline and 23' 9 at the top of the key, that leaves three feet between the three-point line and the out-of-bounds line on the sides. If you take U.S. men's shoe sizes and convert them to inches you find that there is very little room within that three feet.

Here are a few examples to use: Size 11 = 11", Size 12 = 11.31", Size 14 = 12" and Size 15 = 12.31". So most NBA shoes will take up over 1/3 of the three feet between lines.

The rim is 10 feet off the ground and the NBA average reach is somewhere near nine feet. That means when a player stands with his arms fully extended, on average there is only one foot from his fingertips to the rim.

Given this info, the NBA players are about as impressive as me dunking on my grandson's Little Tikes Basketball Hoop. Tickets to watch me would be a bit less.

In conclusion, way too much hype is given to a bunch of big guys playing on such a small court. Is there a wood shortage? Can't the rims be raised?
