NFL Season Preview: AFC East

josh davisJun 4, 2009

Some of you may know (most will not) that I am one part of 2guystalkingfootball (search YouTube). We do NFL news updates and outlooks for all 32 NFL teams with our point of views. This article will go along with our videos. Now, onto the fun stuff.

The Favre situation I see is a bust, no matter what team he goes to. Any team that will look at him obviously has QB problems. They will have QB problems after he is gone. Adding him to their team will not solve that, just escape the inevitable.

For one, he will not be helpful as a tutor to the young guys already on the roster. For two, he will hinder their progress, possibly by ending a young athlete's career before anyone could see if the guy has the potential. In Minnesota, they have guys that, at some point, can play the position (come on, Tavaris Jackson did show some talent at the end of the year).

They went out and got Sage Rosenfels, who before the game against Indianapolis, was showing a spark. One of these guys will not be on the roster next year if Favre comes aboard, and may not be picked up by anyone, and if they are, they definitely will not to battle for the starting position. No one will truly know what their potential "could-have-been."

We decline to comment on the Vick situation until it works itself out. Aside from technically still being a Falcon, he has had no ties to the League in over a year. So, nothing to say about that until its over.

Philadelphia Eagle running back Brian Westbrook will undergo surgery on his ankle tomorrow (June 5). Per reports, it's to either alleviate pain due to arthritis, or bone spurs. My next few statements are purely speculation, but from different sources, I have heard that it all stems from the injury he suffered against Pittsburgh, which was not allowed to heal properly, and led to his knee injury later in the season.

This brings me to the injury report concerning the players. It is a catch-22 for these guys. I may be wrong, but as I understand it, it is in the players contract (this is in no way the legal rendering of the contract) if the team wishes to not disclose the details and/or severity of the injury, the player cannot do so either.

Which means a player has a bad year due to an injury, but the team deems it not important enough to disclose. To other teams, he simply could not repeat a previous years standard of play. Which could, in turn, hurt trade value, or the possibility of getting picked up by another team when/if the player reaches the free agency market. Also, if the player goes against the team's wishes, they could be deemed insubordinate, which again, will lesser their value.

As dear 'ol mom used to say, "honesty is the best policy," and I believe for both the team's and the player's sake, they should be upfront about whats going on, because it can breakdown the relationship between the team, and it's players.

If there is an area that we do not comment on, or anything you guys and gals would like to cover, simply comment on this article, or send us an email to 2guystalkingfootball@gmail.com.

On to the teams.

We will be covering, division-by-division, all NFL teams in the upcoming weeks, starting first with the AFC East.

First, the Bills.

Per team reports, the coaching staff has brought in martial arts experts to work with the players. My take on this is probably to help with footwork, help with blocking and fighting off those blocks. Also, to help the receivers to get off the line in a bump-and-run situation.

I think it's smart and a good move, especially since they brought in T.O., the emergence of Fred Jackson as a viable No. 2 back, and to help Lee Evans with fighting off single coverage. Which is what he will see for the first time this year. The addition of Rhodes in the mix is also interesting. The move definetly gives Trent Edwards another target out of the backfield.

The drafting of three more DBs is also interesting. Per team reports, it is to help combat the emerging four and five wide receiver lineups.

Miami Dolphins

Jason Taylor is back in town! Parcells speaks out about Starks arrest. Pat White and the "Wild'Pat" formation. Adding Gibril Wilson, and Ricky on Ricky.

Been pretty busy in Miami this offseason, which I like to see. How will the return of Taylor be this year? Probably only see him in a few plays each drive, mainly for getting pressure on the QB. Not saying he cannot play, just saying he's an addition to an already full D-line.

Reports are saying that Ronnie Brown, Ted Ginn and Pat White have all lined up in the QB spot in this year rendition of the Wildcat formation. With successful plays being executed by all.

Could this be the wrinkle that offense needs to have a better year? Adding Gibril Wilson to the DB corps is definitely a step in the right direction. They were Burned way too many times last year, and having G back there will shore up some good plays. Ricky says he has two more good years in him.

Do we take his word for it? He was productive last year backing up Ronnie Brown, so Dolphin fans should be hopeful.

New England Patriots

Three of the four preseason games are against NFC East opponents. As an NFC East guy, I find this intriguing. I know, it's just preseason, but still, if you want to just put Ws out there, there's other choices out there. Is Brady ready?

That's the question every Pats fan is asking. For Patriot fan's sake, I hope so. People are saying no, but I'm thinking the first few weeks there may be a few more balls getting thrown away, and a more mobile Tom Brady than what's been seen so far.

A mobile Tom Brady, you ask? You get rolled over onto, tear you knee up, then jump back into the same job again and see if you don't move more quickly than before. I see him being a little skidish in the first few weeks back. Vrabel's gone via trade, and so is Rodney Harrison, but not via trade. Experience will be lost this year, but the Patriots defense never ceases to amaze me.

They'll definitely be missed, but will there be a big drop in play-making ability in those positions? No. Not only are/were they great players, they were great leaders and mentors, so, whoever tutored under them will be just fine.

Alex Smith, Leigh Bodden and Fred Taylor are now Patriots. Smith is hoping to resurrect his career while Bodden seeks to enhance his. Taylor still has football in him, and wants to win. And he will be productive.

So, Pats fans, look forward to another good season. Great, nah. but even a bad season for you guys this past decade is something to enjoy for another at least 24 teams.

New York Jets

Jones reports to camp, followed by fellow backfield partner Leon Washington. I understand what Washington is trying to do about his contract. He has shown he can play; now, lets show him that you appreciate it. Will Jones get his side? I'm saying not. They drafted Shonne Green, which should make Thomas Jones cringe a little, and rethink what he is asking for.

This could spell a departure in his near future, because I think Green is going to shape up nicely. Marky Mark Sanchez. Is he the savior? I don't think so. The Jets didn't do it so much as other teams, because there are weapons there, but i truly think it's ridiculous to think a young, rookie QB is all you need to make your team.

Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, could not have done it without the running game both teams have. the QB should ALWAYS be the last piece of the puzzle added. Too many "busts" out there who could have had real talent, had they supporting cast been better.

That been said, the Jets have a great running game, and weapons outside, so maybe Sanchez can do it. The additions of Lito Sheppard and Jim Leonhard are great moves to help out on the other side of the ball. Look for a steady year Jets fans. Steady good, or steady bad, To be determined.

That wraps it up. As I said before, let us know what you think, because we want this to be the fan's experience. We will simply be the outlet and add our point of views to go along.

Next week, the AFC South.
