Wale' vs. Washington Wizards? Say it Ain't So…
Waleโ is the best rapper to ever come out of the DMVโwhich some might consider a slap in the face to Nonchalant, but so be it.
So itโs quite a hurting feeling to find out the Truth about Waleโs lukewarm feeling on the hometown Washington Wizards.
So admittedly, Wale expressing support for Cleveland left a bad taste in my mouthโa response was necessary.
To which Wale answered:
Now, Iโm not one to speculate on what constitutes a run-in with Waleโ, but his music and the personality he gives off in various interviews doesnโt come across like one prone to antagonize local celebrities. Heโs been totally available to fans, a Twitter fiend, and a great representation of the area in his growing international fame.
Considering that the majority of the Wizards are in the city but not of the city, I would place the blame of my vague interpretation of a run-in I know nothing about on their shoulders. Put simply, I am more likely to believe that a Mike James or a Nick Young was in a setting with Waleโ, one side of the equation showed love, the other side brushed it off.
Am I a D.C. socialite? Absolutely not. Iโm a married guy living just outside of Baltimore, and wouldnโt know the first thing about who or how either side of this story lives. But I do know how it goes down with young black males thinking they are or at least should be the center of attention in a given situation.
So, thereโs a difficult choice to be made here, but thereโs only one right one. If you had to believe a side, you go with the homeboy Waleโ. You love the Wizards, but Waleโ is carrying D.C. hip-hop squarely on his shoulders, and with much more success than Wizards players have carried D.C. professional basketball glory.
You hope for fan allegiance and common sense to prevail, and that our music hero would be in harmony with our sports heroesโbut it canโt always be sweet in Chocolate City.
And for what itโs worth, the native land is always going to trump the native team.
