Matt Hughes Is Pontificating Again, Cover Your Ears
While I am sure that Matt Hughes has people like Mark Fiore, his twin brother Mark, and wife Audra who do listen to his theories about other fighters' losses, I don't think he is that much of an expert on his own losses let alone on those of other fighter's, to be giving that much advice.
Currently, Matt is complaining that Rashad Evans' "coaching" was to blame for his loss to Lyoto Machida.
Matt's first suggestion was that "they should have brought someone like Machida in to practice with him before the fight."
Are fighters just like Lyoto Machida standing on every corner in Hillsboro, IL, offering to have a practice fight with Rashad and he is just unaware of their availability?
My point to Matt Hughes being that Lyoto Machida is more or less an elite fighter whose skills would be hard for another fighter to duplicate in a sparring session.
Can you imagine how hard it would be to achieve this?
Not to mention duplicating Lyoto's thinking process!
Wow, what a tall order that would be!
Maybe this accounts for Hughes' losses to Georges St. Pierre.
How easy would it be for someone to emulate the skill level of GSP?
Not at all that easy, in my opinion, even for his usual training partners who must know Georges pretty well.
While in theory, this may be the actual reason for Rashad's loss, yet, how can this be his coaching staff's fault?
So why is Hughes so down on Rashad's coaches, whom I am actually sure is Greg Jackson and no one else to whom Hughes is referring ?
Additionally, according to Matt Hughes, Rashad should have been in the octagon using his wrestling skills on Lyoto to overwhelm him.
Mmm hmm, like Matt showed off his shooting skills by diving right into Thiago Alves' upraised knee.
That Muy Thai stuff is wicked for knock outs, isn't is Matt?
Now Grandma is not claiming to know how Rashad could have had a better showing against an unusually accomplished fighter like Machida, but Grandma will admit she has never been up against a mountain lion in a fight either, and would probably have to just "wing it" if the occasion ever does arise.
When Matt was up against Denis Hallman on two occasions I would like to point out that during the 21 seconds each fight lasted, Matt did not show off very many of his wrestling abilities either.
Could it be that in life, just like in trying to swim in flood waters, there is actually no good advice that you can give to someone except to wish them "good luck and Godspeed?"
Luckily for my family we have endured and saved others when floods have arisen and others have tried to foolishly challenge themselves with trying to conquer a force of nature, and my point is that Lyoto Machida is a force of nature it would be extremely hard to imitate or predict.
Greg Jackson is not to blame. I am sure he gave advice to the best of his ability.
Rashad was at least brave enough to stand up to the challenge.
As Georges St. Pierre has admitted after the two losses of his own, "Sometimes you learn best from losing."
Rashad, as one of your fans and dedicated supporters, Grandma's advice is to learn what you can from the experience and move on to your next big challenge. You are a great, if somewhat under rated fighter, and the law of averages is on your side.
Good luck, my friend!
