Jordy McElroyJun 8, 2018

Anderson Silva's greatness has allowed him to play with fire throughout his UFC career, but he finally got burned on Saturday night.

At UFC 162, Chris Weidman closed the curtain on "The Spider's" iconic UFC run with arguably the most stunning knockout in UFC history.

MMA fans all over the world woke up Sunday morning with one question on their minds: What in the hell exactly happened Saturday night?

You can start by pinching yourself. What occurred Saturday night wasn't some convoluted dream. Yes, Silva did get knocked out while doing The Matrix, and yep, Weidman is the new UFC middleweight champion.

As the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Silva has been able to get away with a lot of bad fighting habits that wouldn't be tolerated by most coaches. This is simply because no other fighter is capable of doing the things he is able to do.

Silva has especially developed a knack for taunting his opponents and fighting with his hands down. Throughout his UFC career, the MMA world has praised him for his ability to anticipate incoming strikes and make people miss. Over the years, he has used his unique skill set to make some of the best fighters in the world look like amateurs competing at a level in which they didn't belong.

But Weidman certainly isn't an amateur, and he refused to be treated like one. While Silva pranced around with his hands down, Weidman remained patient and eventually landed a glancing left hook that dropped Silva midway through one of his taunts, which is about as humbling as it gets in fighting.

After the fight, Weidman told UFC commentator Joe Rogan he knew it was only a matter of time before he made Silva pay for not blocking.

"It pisses me off when someone tries to do that to me," he said. "I just knew little by little, I was going to creep on him, and when he slept, I was going to get him."

There is definitely a lesson that can be taken from this fight and applied to the future careers of every aspiring MMA fighter.

Keep those hands up.
