Players to Watch

Victor Oladipo, G, Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic drafted Oladipo with the No. 2 pick in the 2013 draft and are going to give him a chance to play some point guard this summer.

While that looks to be a disaster in the making, the former Indiana Hoosiers star did prove he was one of the most versatile players in the college ranks and arguably the hardest worker out there.

His motor, energy and work ethic are what separated him from the rest of the pack and allowed Orlando to still feel comfortable drafting him after Anthony Bennett came off the board at No. 1.

It may be sloppy at times this week, but don’t bet against this young man eventually developing into a serviceable ball-handler and facilitator.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Detroit Pistons

Despite not filling the most pressing need on their roster, the Detroit Pistons made the bold decision to draft Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with the No. 8 overall selection.

The Motor City-based franchise received an elite prospect who could eventually be one of the best shooting guards in the league, but it’s going to take a bit of time for him to get there.

Without a top-tier point guard on the roster—Jose Calderon joined the Dallas Mavericks and Brandon Knight is more of a combo-guard—it could take some time for KCP—a weak ball-handler himself—to come along.

However, if the Georgia Bulldogs product is able to work hard and create his own shot on a consistent basis, the offense could flow through him for a significant stretch.

He’ll definitely take plenty of shots over these next few days in South Florida.

Myck Kabongo, PG, Miami Heat

When all is said and done, the Miami Heat may have the steal of the 2013 NBA draft on their hands—and they didn’t even call this young man’s name during the event.

Kabongo joined the two-time defending champions as an undrafted free agent almost immediately after the 60 picks came off the board.

The Texas Longhorns product was a potential first-round pick, but suffered through poor play and suspensions during his time in Austin. Now he has a chance to prove that he still has the ability to play in the NBA and crack one of the toughest rosters to break into in the league.

Kabongo is a pass-first guard who plays a bit like Rajon Rondo. He’s athletic and can penetrate the lane with ease, but would rather kick out to an open teammate instead.

If he makes drive-and-dish plays this week, expect president Pat Riley to give the young man heavy consideration for the 12-man roster.
