2013 NHL Draft: The Most Eye-Popping Stats from Prospects' Amateur Careers
The 2013 NHL draft features a number of marquee prospects who possess some equally attention-grabbing statistics from their amateur careers.
While the prospects themselves garner enough attention from professional scouts as it is, these statistics help to push them even further up the big board come draft day.
Here are five of the most attention-grabbing statistics from the 2013 draft class.
Nicolas Petan, Portland Winterhawks, WHL, 120 Points
1 of 5Nicolas Petan is ranked as the 33rd overall North American skater by NHL.com's Central Scouting. But Petan could be deserving of a higher ranking than that as he shared the CHL's scoring title with Nashville Predators prospect Brendan Leipsic.
Petan put up 120 points in 71 games, driving up the statistics of teammate and Central Scouting's No. 1-ranked prospect Seth Jones.
Could Petan continue his scoring touch at the NHL level? It's possible, but certainly not likely that he would ever be as wide open as he is in his highlight video above.
But Petan has a very good chance of being the best "steal" pick in the second round, assuming he isn't taken higher than that.
Nathan MacKinnon, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL, 13 Points in Memorial Cup
2 of 5No matter what level of hockey is played, the playoffs prove which players come to play and which players are going to pull their best cameo appearance.
Nathan MacKinnon came to play and came to win in the Memorial Cup Championships, putting up 13 points in just four games.
While one could argue that because the Mooseheads were such a talented team this past season—with what could be two of the top three draft picks in Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin—the fact remains that someone needed to "drive the bus" offensively for the Mooseheads.
MacKinnon was that player for Halifax in the Memorial Cup, chiming in on 13 of their 24 goals in the tournament.
While MacKinnon would have been the No. 2-ranked player in the North American part of Central Scouting's rankings, he cemented his place even more with his showing in the Memorial Cup.
Samuel Morin, Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL, Power Output on the Wingate Bike
3 of 5The NHL Combine is a place where a highly ranked player's draft stock can take a big fall, or in some cases a lower-ranked player's draft stock can improve tremendously.
The latter of these situations played out with Samuel Morin, who tied for best on the Wingate bike test, via TopEndSports.com, at the 2013 NHL Combine.
Morin put up 15.8 watts per kilogram of body weight at the combine. As Morin is listed on the NHL.com draft page as being 202 pounds, that's quite a bit of power to go around.
While Morin may not be the most exciting defenseman to watch in terms of offensive abilities with just 16 points in 46 games last season, his strong showing on the bike shows that he has the tools to develop the top-end foot speed that is sought from defensemen at the NHL level.
Morin also ended up moving up from 76th overall to 23rd overall from the midterm to final rankings on NHL.com's Central Scouting.
Myles Bell, Kelona Rockets, WHL, 93 Points as a Defenseman
4 of 5Reading the story of Myles Bell is inspirational in and of itself, via CBC.ca. Bell was in a car crash in 2011 and missed the entire 2011-12 season.
Bell battled back this season to put up 93 points in 69 games, the sixth-highest point total in the WHL and highest for a defenseman this season.
The 20-year-old Calgary native could come in and fight for a roster spot if he continues to put up numbers like that, but at 46th overall in the North American skater rankings, Bell might be considered a long shot to make an NHL roster if he cannot sustain the offensive prowess that he showed last season.
Aleksander Barkov, Tappara Tempere, SM-Liiga
5 of 5The thing about Aleksander "Sasha" Barkov is that he is already playing in a man's body at the age of 17. Playing a man's game is nothing new as the No. 1 European skater prospect, per NHL.com's Central Scouting.
But Barkov did do something "new" when he became the youngest Finnish player to score in a World Junior Championship, doing so at 16 years and four months old back in early 2012.
Barkov is ready to play a hard-hitting, gritty North American game when he likely makes the jump to the AHL or NHL next season.
