Updates on Where Minnesota Wild's 2013 Draft Picks Are Now
The Minnesota Wild no longer have their first-round pick, which would have come at No. 16, due to their trade with the Buffalo Sabres for forward Jason Pominville. The Wild sent Matt Hackett, Johan Larsson and a second-round pick in 2014 in addition to this pick for Pominville and a fourth-round pick in 2014.
This means that Minnesota’s first pick will come in the second round this year.
Listed in this slideshow is where the team is picking, if it was received in a trade and what it should do with that pick.
Round 2, No. 46 Overall
1 of 8This pick did not come as a result of a trade.
The Wild should use this selection to take a large defenseman who perhaps needs a little more time in junior or college but could eventually become part of the team’s second or third pairing down the road.
Round 3, No. 70 Overall
2 of 8Minnesota received this pick as part of the trade that sent Marek Zidlicky to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Kurtis Foster, Nick Palmieri, Stephane Veilleux, the Washington Capitals' 2012 second-round pick and this pick.
This pick was conditional and was converted when the Devils made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2012 and Zidlicky was played in 75 percent of the first two rounds.
The Wild should use this selection to add offensive depth with a forward.
Round 3, No. 81 Overall
3 of 8Minnesota received this pick in the trade that sent James Sheppard to the San Jose Sharks.
Keep in mind that Sheppard was the No. 9 overall selection in 2006 and is only 25 years old. He has underachieved so far, but it is something to keep in mind.
The Wild should try for another forward, perhaps a project who has the opportunity to be a star if developed correctly.
Round 4, No. 107 Overall
4 of 8This pick did not come as a result of a trade.
Minnesota could go either way with this pick: defenseman or forward. As long as this player comes up and provides depth for the big league club, the Wild have done well with this selection.
Round 5, No. 137 Overall
5 of 8This pick did not come as result of a trade.
The Wild should use the same philosophy with this selection as with their fourth-rounder: Take the best skater on the board.
Round 6, No. 167 Overall
6 of 8This pick did not come as a result of a trade.
A lot of great goaltenders come out of the last rounds, and the Wild need to ensure they have depth at this position going forward. Most of these guys will not show up for four or five years, so see this as a future investment.
Round 7, No. 197 Overall
7 of 8This pick did not come as a result of the trade.
The Wild should take a goalie here.
Round 7, No. 200 Overall
8 of 8Minnesota received this pick as a part of the trade that sent Casey Wellman to the New York Rangers in exchange for Erik Christensen. The pick was conditional and converted when Christensen was not re-signed after the 2012-13 NHL season. Christensen signed with HC Lev Praha of the KHL in the offseason.
The Wild should take a goalie here.
