Projecting Tiger Woods' Day 4 Score at 2013 US Open

Rob GoldbergJun 16, 2013

Unless something miraculous happens, Tiger Woods will not be able to end his major drought at the 2013 U.S. Open.

The superstar is winning tournaments at an incredible rate this season, already earning four titles to put him in first place in the FedEx Cup points. Unfortunately, is still yet to win a major since 2008.

While the U.S. Open appeared to give him a good chance to break this streak, Woods has failed to live up to expectations through three rounds. Despite coming into Saturday in relative contention at three-over par, he shot a 76 in Round 3 to knock him down the leaderboard.

Roland Martin of TV One did a good job of describing the round:

He will enter the final round at nine strokes over par which, even on a tough course, is far from the current leaders:

There are a few reasons to be concerned about this performance. ESPN UK points out that Woods appeared to be injured after the first day of play:

However, it is also possible that the pressure of the major championships have gotten to him. Ron Sirak of Golf Digest provides this unfortunate statistic about his recent performances:

As a result, it is hard to imagine Woods putting together a much better showing on the final day of the tournament now that he knows he has little chance of competing.

The strange thing about his performance so far is that he is struggling in the area that he has had the most success in so far this year. Entering the week, Woods ranked fifth on tour in strokes gained in putting (via PGATour.com), but he has struggled immensely on the greens in this tournament.

He was not getting his reads right, and when he did his speed was off. Here is a look at the talented golfer missing what was basically a gimme:

This is unlikely to change in the fourth and final round at Merion.

While his driving accuracy has kept him from completely falling apart, his putting should continue to doom him on the final day. His confidence is shot for the week, and he will need to clear his head before once again competing for a title.

On Sunday, look for Woods to get about two-thirds of his greens in regulation, but continue to struggle once he is on the green. Another round above par is expected, somewhere in the neighborhood of a 73.

Hopefully, the 14-time major champion will be able to shake off this performance before it is time to play the Open Championship. Otherwise, this drought will last at least a little longer.
