Mexico vs. Italy: El Tri's Offensive Struggles Will Continue Against Azzurri

Richard LangfordJun 15, 2013

A delicious matchup of styles awaits in the Confederations Cup, as Italy's defense will shine by stalemating the quick attack of Mexico at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

While Mexico has rolled through 2013 in unbeaten fashion and they have a talented attack, their offense has begun to stall out.

They have suffered through two straight goalless draws. Both have come in World Cup qualifying play and were against Costa Rica and Panama.

As a result, despite their unblemished record for the year, coach Jose Manuel de la Torre has to feel like his seat is getting a little hot. It's not just about the last two matches either.

In World Cup qualifying hexagonal play, el Tri has scored just three goals in six games. They also have eight draws in their last nine games overall.

With an offense featuring Manchester United's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez at forward and fellow striker Aldo de Nigris, these are lackluster results.

Now, fresh off of matches where they failed to score against Costa Rica and Panama, this attack must try and find its way against the rugged defense of the Azzurri.

Chicharito has been doing what he can with limited chances recently. He's notched four of the last five Mexican goals. However, the Azzurri will be able to focus on limiting him, and they will be successful.

Italy has had a nice run since Cesare Prandelli took over managing duties two years ago. They reached the European Championship last year before falling to Spain. While Prandelli has made great strides with this squad to improve the offense with improved midfield play, the Azzurri can still play quality defense.

Italy allowed two goals their last time on the pitch in a disappointing 2-2 draw to Haiti, but that was just a friendly. In the match previous, a World Cup qualifier, Italy shut out the Czech Republic.

Of course, that was a disappointing 0-0 draw, and goals will be tough to come by against a suddenly stingy Mexican defense, but they'll only need one, because Mexico will not be able to find a goal in this one.
