Assessing Top Golfers Who Struggled on Day 1
Matt Kuchar (+4)
Matt Kuchar was red-hot headed into the 2013 U.S. Open, coming off a victory at the Memorial Tournament and a second-place finish at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
But I wasn't that confident in Kuchar heading into Merion Golf Club, precisely because of the fact that he hasn't been an accurate driver this season. The 34-year-old ranked 134th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy before the 2013 U.S. Open, per PGATour.com. Even when he won the Memorial, he ranked 37th in the field in driving accuracy, via CBSSports.com.
At Merion, the rough can be absolutely brutal. As Steve DiMeglio of USA Today noted, there are six different types of grass on the course.
Ben Crane tweeted on Thursday:
The course simply doesn't fit Kuchar's game.
Brandt Snedeker (+4)
Brandt Snedeker's start to the 2013 U.S. Open was perhaps the most puzzling for me.
Headed into the tournament, he appeared to have just the game to conquer Merion, ranking ninth on tour in driving accuracy and 22nd in putting (strokes gained), according to PGATour.com.
But a four-over-par 74 is not what the 32-year-old American had in mind. That included three bogeys and a double bogey on hole No. 2.
Snedeker had missed his last two cuts coming into the U.S. Open this year, so it appears his form is simply out of whack right now, regardless of how well Merion plays to his strengths.
Keegan Bradley (+7)
Keegan Bradley had six top-10 finishes in 15 PGA Tour events this year heading into the U.S. Open, but in his last five tournaments, he placed 54th at the Masters, missed the cut twice and placed 50th at the Memorial.
The 27-year-old appears to be in a funk right now. He posted five bogeys and a triple bogey on hole No. 16 on Thursday, as nothing appeared to be working for him.
On top of that, Merion doesn't particularly suit his game.
He ranks 74th on tour in driving accuracy this season, per PGATour.com. He also placed 68th at the U.S. Open last year at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
It's difficult for Bradley to play much worse than he did on Thursday, but I don't exactly expect him to come roaring back at the 2013 U.S. Open, either.
