Russia vs Germany: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and More for Euro U-21 Match

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

Russia and Germany are forced to play for pride in each side's final match of the European Under-21 Championship. The Group B counterparts were both mathematically eliminated from semifinal contention with losses in their first two matches.

The Sbornaya actually had a decent showing in their opener against Spain. Whatever hope remained after that narrow 1-0 defeat was quickly eradicated as the Netherlands scored five times to ensure it would advance to the next round.

Germany was competitive in both of its first two losses. The Mannschaft let a draw slip through their grasp when Leroy Fer scored in the 90th minute for the Dutch and then gave up an 86th-minute goal in a 1-0 loss to Spain.

Preview

The biggest problem for Russia has been an inability to create any sustained offensive pressure. In the opener, the Sbornaya didn't register a single shot on target. They had five in the loss to the Netherlands, but only scored once and gave it right back four minutes later.

Finding a way to change that in the finale should be the team's main goal. It's not an issue of talent. Fyodor Smolov and Alan Dzagoev, who missed the opening match, give Russia one of the most dangerous attacking duos in the tournament.

Getting them more involved in the early stages of the match is the challenge. The German back line did show some vulnerability against the Netherlands, which should lead to more space for Smolov and Dzagoev. They must take advantage of it.

On the defensive end, the outlook is simply. The Sbornaya need more of what they showed against Spain and less of the mental mistakes made against the Jong Oranje to avoid another lopsided loss.

It's been a tale of two matches for the Germans so far. In the first, they moved forward with authority and went basically step for step with the Netherlands. But one too many lapses at the back cost them mightily.

The Mannschaft were able to fix the issues at the back against Spain, but their attack went silent. They got just two chances on target and rarely threatened the stout Spanish back line. Both matches were close calls, but losses nevertheless.

Germany needs find a way to combine the aggressive attacking from the opener and the reliable defending of the second match into one complete performance. Given the way Russia played in its last match, the Sbornaya shouldn't provide much resistance.

It's hard to imagine the intensity level for either side will be high given the limited stakes. That said, Germany has been the better side so far and should find a way to earn the win.
