The Los Angeles Dodgers called Yasiel Puig up for his offense, but it was his defense that made his major league debut memorable.

The San Diego Padres had one on and one out against Dodgers closer Brandon League in the ninth, looking to erase a one-run deficit. Kyle Blanks hit a deep fly ball to right, where Puig got under it to make the play.

But even though that was only the second out of the inning, Puig had his eyes set on winning the game right then and there. Chris Denorfia was running on the play and wasn’t really sprinting back to first base. Puig fired a strike to Adrian Gonzalez at first, just beating Denorfia to the bag for the out and the victory.

Here's a GIF of the play, via the Dodgers' Tumblr account:

Puig clearly has a cannon for an arm. Even after just one game, don't be surprised if you don't see many runners trying to test him in the near future, no matter which base he's throwing to. The precision of the throw was remarkable and couldn't have been any more on the mark.

Not many outfielders in Major League Baseball have that strong of an arm as well as the ability to throw the ball exactly where they want. That's just one of the reasons Puig is so special.

The Dodgers (on Twitter) thought the double play was incredible to say the least:

Here’s what Puig had to say about his new team, per the Dodgers’ Twitter:

Every guy here is giving everything we have every game so that we can accomplish what we want, which is to bring a championship to LA. -Puig

Gonzalez, the guy who caught the ball from Puig, also had some thoughts, via his personal Twitter account:

Did you see that, wow, what a fake at second and throw to first to end the game! Great win!

With injuries in the Los Angeles outfield, the Dodgers promoted Puig from Double-A in time for Monday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres. Leading off for the Dodgers, he lined a single to left-center for the first hit of his career in the bottom half of the first inning.

Puig later hit a single to right field in the sixth inning after Padres first baseman Kyle Blanks couldn’t make the play. Going 2-for-4 in his debut with a pair of singles was a nice way to start his career, but it was the play in right field in the top of the ninth that will have people talking.

The Dodgers are still eight games under .500, but with Puig in the lineup and in the outfield, Los Angeles could be back in the hunt before you know it. He’s a game-changer—for those who didn’t know that going into Monday’s game, they do now.
