Epsom Derby 2013 Payouts: Full Breakdown of Earnings for Each Horse

Tim DanielsJun 2, 2018

Ruler Of The World stormed past the field during the stretch run to win the 2013 Epsom Derby. The three-year-old colt outlasted Libertarian and Galileo Rock, a pair of long shots that ended up finishing second and third, respectively (via Channel 4 Racing).

Triple Crown hopeful Dawn Approach, winner of the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, was a non-factor throughout the race. The horse's lackluster break combined with a slow pace and the extended distance was too much to overcome.

Trainer Jim Bolger mentioned the mile-and-a-half distance after the race.

The victory keeps Ruler Of The World undefeated through three career starts. He previously won a maiden stakes race and the Grade 3 Chester Vase. It also marks the first career defeat for Dawn Approach, winner of his first seven.

A lot of credit belongs to jockey Ryan Moore. He put Ruler Of The World in perfect position during the first half of the race, which allowed him to preserve energy for the homestretch. The plan worked as the horse finished extremely strong.

Moore previously won the 2012 Epsom Derby with Workforce. The three-time Champion Jockey continues to add to an already impressive career résumé.

Even though Libertarian and Galileo Rock were unable to catch Ruler Of The World, both overlooked horses had very promising runs. The race was geared toward late pace and each of them displayed plenty of it at Epsom Downs.

As for the favorite, Dawn Approach, he never found his comfort zone. Distance could have been a factor. He had never attempted a race of more than one mile. But quite simply, it seemed like he just endured an off day.

The loss by Dawn Approach means the English Triple Crown will go unclaimed yet again. Nijinsky was the last horse to accomplish the feat in 1970.
