Cristiano Ronaldo: Simply the Best

Jeff HarbertMar 21, 2008

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s phenomenal goal-scoring form last season which guided Manchester United to the 2007 English Premier League crown, few were expecting the Portuguese winger to match last season’s tally.

Even Chelsea’s own goal scoring hero, Didier Drogba, claimed there was no way Ronaldo could score 23 goals again.

“He is not a machine,” he said.

Not only has Ronaldo matched his tally of 23 goals scored in last year’s campaign, but he’s scored one more than that in the league alone. His combined tally in all competitions is now an astonishing 33 goals thanks to his latest double against Bolton in midweek.

Ronaldo’s two goals saw him earn his seventh league double of the season, but more importantly saw him bypass George Best’s record of goals scored by a winger.

Cristiano Ronaldo recently stated his desire to become a United legend. “I want to be part of the story of this club and if I keep going like that, then why not?” he said.

There is no reason why not. If Ronaldo continues playing the way he has this season, he will undoubtedly be revered by the Old Trafford faithful in the same way as George Best. The twenty-three year-old winger is averaging a goal for every start and shows no signs that he’s ready to slow down.

Not a machine, Drogba?

Some would disagree.

Whether or not Cristiano Ronaldo is a goal-scoring machine, he is undeniably one of the best players in the English Premier League, if not the best. The stats speak for themselves.

But it’s so much more than the stats which make Cristiano Ronaldo the league’s most outstanding player. His form this season has been exceptional as he looks to dazzle his way to another PFA player of the year award.

Reclaiming that prize, however, is most likely the last thing on Ronaldo’s mind as he aims to help his side regain the ultimate honor of the English Premier League. With eight games left and 24 points still up for grabs, Ronaldo will need to continue to play at his best in order to win his second Premier League crown.

His side’s championship credentials face a stern test on Sunday when hated rivals Liverpool make the visit to Old Trafford. The Red Devils stole all three points back in December thanks to a Carlos Tevez goal, and another win will be vital in United’s push for the title.

Last time around it was Carlos Tevez and United’s back four which inspired them to victory against Liverpool.

Who will it be this time?

Don’t bet against it being Ronaldo.
