NFL Offseason: Oakland Raiders Gamble with Free Agent Signings

Chad WolfMar 20, 2008

As an Oakland Raiders fan, it's one of those free agency periods you can and can't complain about.

A few of our deals are just outrageous.

The deal Tommy Kelly received was unspeakable. I know with Warren "The QB Killa" Sapp leaving the acquisition became a pressing need—but not a seven-year, $50.5 million need.

Especially not when Kelly was hurt most of the season.

Sure, he had that one blocked field goal when the Raiders were playing the Browns that lead to a win, but that doesn't say "Pay me $50 million."

I guess Kelly is making it big due to his versatility and the lack of any real star defensive tackles in free agency.

But enough about him.  Onto a few other questionable signings.

Javon Walker, six years, $55 million. Wow! That is just insane money.

Walker went deep and caught himself a $55 million pass. I mean, the guy is coming off an injury-filled season and yet the Raiders throw him that much money.

I just don't know what to say about that deal.

We could have re-signed Jerry Porter and grabbed two other quiet unknown wideouts (Such as Bryant Johnson and D.J. Hackett), and would have been better off cap-wise than we are now.

Sure, his contract is back-loaded, but still an $11 million singing bonus is crazy. Hopefully, a football God will be looking over us and have Walker stay healthy because when he is 100 percent, he is a top five wideout.

The best deal we made was with former Giants' strong safety Gibril Wilson.

We needed a safety who would be able to tackle like a linebacker, and he has proven himself as a big hitter by piling up over 100 tackles the past few seasons.

But so far, our free agency has been a high risk type of free agency. We might win big—or we might lose huge and be forced to rebuild, yet again.
