Eagles vs. Cardinals: Talking Points from the Cards' Big Week 3 Win
Well that went well.
The Arizona Cardinals' 27-6 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday was about as thorough as the team could have hoped. Furthermore, the win marks the first time since 1974 that the franchise has started a season 3-0.
With so much great about the game and occasion, it's hard not to view the team's outlook with rose-colored glasses.
With that being said, even with such overwhelming positivity, let's look at the talking points from the game and the implications on the rest of the Cardinals' season.
Larry Fitzgerald Gets into the Action
1 of 5Despite their two wins, one issue was clearly concerning the Cardinals (and many fantasy owners) through the first two weeks of the season.
That is, Larry Fitzgerald's lack of productivity.
In Week 1, the wideout snagged four receptions for 63 yards.
Against the New England Patriots, Fitzgerald caught one pass for four yards.
By no means were these performances his fault. In fact, what made it so alarming was the uncertainty as to whether quarterback Kevin Kolb could get him the ball.
That changed on Sunday when Fitzgerald had another good game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 29-year-old caught nine passes for 114 yards and a beautiful touchdown.
If Fitzgerald can find this sort of rhythm with Kolb, it could make the Cards' offense formidable.
Kevin Kolb Steps Up Against Old Team
2 of 5When John Skelton got hurt in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, Kevin Kolb came in and led the game-winning drive, but many were still asking if Skelton would be available to start the next week.
When Kolb helped the Cardinals to a huge road win over the Patriots, it became a question as to whether Kevin would keep his job when Skelton got healthy.
Now, there are no more questions.
In what was easily the best game of his career, Kolb put up some fantastic numbers against his old team. He completed 17 of his 24 pass attempts for 222 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Furthermore, his ability to find Fitzgerald was hugely improved.
This is definitely Kolb's job to lose.
Young Talents Showing Promise
3 of 5When the camera panned to Ryan Williams following his terrible fumble in Foxborough, we knew he could go one of two ways.
He would either use the mistake as fuel to get better or crumble under the pressure.
On Sunday, he proved it's going to be the former.
Williams came in at the end of the fourth quarter and ran hard to end the game. Despite the fact he effectively ran the clock out, he seemed genuinely upset when he was unable to reach the end zone on an impressive run play.
Expect Williams to continue getting better as the season continues.
Meanwhile, across the field, rookie Michael Floyd made a statement with the first catch of his career, which happened to be a touchdown.
A Few Injury Concerns
4 of 5For the second consecutive week, Beanie Wells was unable to finish on Sunday.
A toe injury sidelined the running back against the Eagles in the closing stages of the contest.
Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett left the game in the fourth quarter with a right hamstring injury as well.
Cardinals beat writer Darren Urban tweeted about the situation: "Beanie Wells said he could have turf toe. He and Darnell Dockett will be checked out more tomorrow."
Arizona would probably miss both players dearly.
Wells recorded over 1,000 rushing yards last season, which is a milestone for any Cardinals back.
Meanwhile, Dockett has been a key part of the defense thus far in 2012. He has provided huge pressure up the middle with Calais Campbell.
Is This Defense the Best in the NFL?
5 of 5A few years ago, this question would have made everybody laugh.
However, in the last year and a half, Ray Horton has transformed this defense into a juggernaut.
Holding Michael Vick and the Eagles to just six points is only the latest in a long line of great defensive displays by this team.
The Cardinals haven't allowed an opponent to score more than two touchdowns in 12 straight games.
With that being said, this defense obviously has a lot more to prove to claim the title of best in the NFL.
However, they have certainly put themselves in the discussion.
