Tim Tebow: Jets Backup Destined to Pass Mark Sanchez on the Depth Chart

Rick WeinerSep 4, 2012

Mark Sanchez has been set up to fail.

Aside from wide receiver Santonio Holmes, what weapons does Mark Sanchez have at his disposal?

Dustin Keller is a fine tight end, but he's a far cry from the elite group of playmakers up in New England (a group that could be adding yet another weapon to their arsenal).

Shonn Greene? A decent running back, but he's never lived up to the considerable promise that he had coming out of Iowa, even with a 1,000-yard season on his resume.

After those two, the Jets are left with a group of unproven youngsters and mediocre veterans in Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Chaz Schilens, Patrick Turner and Joe McKnight.

Let's forget about his lack of weapons for a second. Surely, Sanchez will have protection in front of him, allowing him time to find an open target downfield, right?

Wrong. While their offensive line has some talented players in center Nick Mangold and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the group as a whole is a porous unit that does little to keep opposing defenses out of their backfield—and off of their quarterback.

But the Jets brought Tebow in for a reason, and it wasn't just to run the team's version of the gimmicky "Wildcat offense."

Tebow, not Sanchez, will be the one under center when the team gets into the red zone.

Tebow, not Sanchez, has the motor to elude the pass rush and make a play with his legs downfield when the pocket collapses.

And it's Tebow, not Sanchez, who is the apple of Jets owner Woody Johnson's eye.

In a conversation with CNBC just over a week ago, Johnson uttered these famous words: "I think you can never have too much Tebow" (h/t NY Daily News).

When the Jets' offense sputters out of the gate on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, you will be sure to hear the "We Want Tebow" chants begin to rain down upon the field at MetLife Stadium.

As the weeks go by and the offense continues to struggle, those chants will only grow louder, but they'll not only be coming from the stands—members of the media and even some Jets players will find themselves unable to resist.

It's not a matter of if Tim Tebow will take over under center as Rex Ryan tries to avoid addressing the multiple deficiencies of a poorly constructed unit—it's a matter of when.

Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts sounds about right.
