B/R Official Rankings for September: Top 10 Flyweights in MMA

Riley KontekJun 7, 2018

August did not provide us with many flyweight fights, but the rankings picture is still up in the air. The 125-pounders are still scattered among different organizations, but the top ones will likely all land in the UFC at some point.

The only flyweights of note that competed in August have been John Moraga and Ulysses Gomez. Moraga, of course, defeated Gomez by knockout at UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera.

These is the official rankings of the flyweight division for September 2012.

10. John Moraga

2 of 11

Promotion: UFC

Record: 11-1

Most Recent Fight: Knockout victory vs. Ulysses Gomez

Next Fight: TBD

Previous Ranking: N/A

Bursting onto the rankings is John Moraga, who made a successful debut in his thrashing of Ulysses Gomez.

Moraga is a very well-rounded fighter. He has a solid wrestling base to go with his powerful striking, which was on display against Gomez.

He has no scheduled opponent right now, but the memory of his lone loss to John Dodson should prompt him to get a rematch in the meantime. With the flyweight picture developing, any fight in the division is possible.

9. Chris Cariaso

3 of 11

Promotion: UFC

Record: 14-3

Most Recent Fight: Unanimous decision victory against Josh Ferguson

Next Fight: TBD

Previous Ranking: 9

Chris Cariaso was good at bantamweight, but his move to flyweight has made him a player in the division.

Cariaso's striking, along with his underrated grappling ability, has seen him go on a three-fight win streak, with two of those wins at 135 pounds. One has to think another win could put him into title contention.

The Ultimate Fighter alumnus Louis Gaudinot's drop back to 125 has seen him garner success, as he already owns one victory at 125 pounds.

Gaudinot is usually going to be the smaller fighter in fights, but his skill and speed often favor him. He was supposed to fight Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on FX in Minneapolis, but an injury forced him from the bout.

7. Darrell Montague

5 of 11

Record: 11-2

Most Recent Fight: Knockout victory against Taylor McCorriston

Next Fight: TBD

Previous Ranking: 7

The only non-UFC fighter to make the list comes in at No. 7, as Darrell Montague earns the nod.

Montague is a former champion in the Tachi Palace Fights promotion. He is extremely well-rounded and dangerous, as he has faced some of the top talent at 125.

A call from the UFC should come soon, as he would bolster the depth in the division.

One of the UFC's newest assets, Jussier da Silva, comes in at No.4 in the rankings. "Formiga" is a threat in any aspect of fighting, especially on the ground.

The Brazilian owns seven submission wins in his career. His UFC debut comes against the very tough John Dodson, which could earn him a title shot if he wins.

3. Ian McCall

Next Fight: TBD

Ian McCall, despite losing his latest outing to Demetrious Johnson, still has to be considered in the title picture. The skilled 125er has a track record of beating top flyweights.

Owning victories over the likes of Dustin Ortiz, Darrell Montague and Jussier da Silva, McCall has one of the most impressive resumes in the division. Despite his last loss, a win in his next fight may get him a title shot.

Demetrious Johnson will be fighting for the first-ever flyweight title this month, and a victory could catapult him into the top spot in the rankings.

"Mighty Mouse" uses a combination of speed and wrestling to frustrate opponents. There are few who can match his skill, and come fight night in Toronto, we will see if he or the next man in the rankings is the best man at 125.

1. Joseph Benavidez

Record: 16-2

Most Recent Fight: Knockout victory against Yasuhiro Urushitani

Next Fight: vs. Demetrious Johnson at UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort

As of right now, the No.1 flyweight in the world has to be Joseph Benavidez. Benavidez, who blitzed Yasuhiro Urushitani in his flyweight debut, is fighting for the inaugural flyweight title this month.

Benavidez is extremely well-rounded and a tough out for any man. A win over Johnson will make him a definitive No.1 and the first-ever flyweight champion in the UFC.
