Rob Rang's Mock Draft: What Is He Thinking?

Chad DonaldsonFeb 24, 2009

I was recently perusing the CBS Sports Web site, and one of the lead articles on the front page are tidbits from the NFL Scouting Combine. This is one of those article that touches on winners and losers of the biggest event of the NFL's offseason prior to the draft.

Mentioned in the article is the fact that Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, whom one writer termed "the safest pick in the draft," ran a 4.56 40-yard dash Monday. This by the way is faster than the top two running backs available.

Underneath the link to the article is another link to various mock drafts. The mock drafts are written by supposed NFL experts.

One of these supposed experts is one Rob Rang. In his mock draft, Rang has the Cleveland Browns selecting Everette Brown, a defensive end from Florida State University. He also has Curry falling all the way to the Packers, who own the ninth overall pick.

Now, I'm not saying that I am an expert. But I’m not an idiot. In his explanation as to why the Browns would take Brown, Rang talks about the fact that the team had just 17 sacks last season, and had the crappiest pass rush in the NFL.

Now if the Browns ran the 4-3 defense Brown would be a good choice. The Browns run the 3-4 defense which makes him a bad choice.

The Browns have just two true playmakers on defense—Shaun Rogers and D'Qwell Jackson. Sean Jones does make plays but he tends to disappear at times. If the Browns hope to contend anytime soon they need to add more playmakers.

Which brings me to my point. Curry is the best playmaker in the draft. As I mentioned earlier, he has been described as "the safest pick.” This is why the Browns need to grab him at No. five if he is available.

I would love for the Browns to grab a Buckeye in Malcolm Jenkins, because its’ true, the Browns need help in the secondary. But the biggest concern for the Browns is their defensive front seven.

This is exactly why the Browns need Curry. He is fast, explosive tackler, and  he wraps up when he tackles, rather than hitting the ball carrier and hoping he falls to the ground. He is also a player with high character.

Curry is the opposite of NFL prospect Jeremiah Pharms.
