NBA Free Agency: Who's the Better LA Newcomer, Grant Hill or Antawn Jamison?
As the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers continue to compete for the keys to the city they both share, new players are coming to town.
Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison are the newest additions, with the veteran small forward joining Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, while the long-range sniper teams up with Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.
So, which one will turn into the better L.A. newcomer?
Although Hill is going to make a big impact backing up Caron Butler for the Clippers, Jamison has to be the prohibitive favorite in the battle between the two veterans.
First of all, he's simply better. Take a look at the per-36 minutes stats from last season, via Basketball-Reference.com:
| MPG | PP36 | AP36 | RP36 | SP36 | BP36 | PER | |
| Antawn Jamison | 33.1 | 18.7 | 6.8 | 2.2 | 0.9 | 0.7 | 16.1 |
| Grant Hill | 28.1 | 13.0 | 4.5 | 2.8 | 1.1 | 0.8 | 12.3 |
Jamison is clearly the better offensive player at this point, and it's not even close. His shooting from the mid-range and perimeter easily trumps any spring that Grant Hill has left in his quadragenarian knees.
On defense, it's not close either. Hill is still an elite perimeter defender, while Jamison might as well scoff at the thought of even getting into a defensive stance.
Jamison's game doesn't make him take much of a beating, and he's younger than Hill is, so he's going to decline at a slower rate than his new L.A. counterpart.
Hill's defense makes this a competition, but Jamison's offense still wins out.
Additionally, Jamison is going to receive a much bigger role with the Lakers than Hill will with the Clippers.
While the Clippers have one of the league's best benches, prominently featuring Hill, Lamar Odom, Eric Bledsoe and Jamal Crawford, the Lakers are in the opposite boat.
Other than Jamison, the Lakers have...wait for it...Steve Blake, Devin Ebanks, Christian Eyenga, Andrew Goudelock, Darius Morris and Josh McRoberts.
There's no doubt that Jamison immediately becomes the leader of the second unit and gets an opportunity to put up big numbers in that role. He won't score as much as he did in the starting lineup for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but his efficiency will reign supreme.
Both players will make big impacts for their new squads, but Jamison is undoubtedly the better newcomer.
