Los Angeles Clippers: What Blake Griffin Must Do to Develop His Game

Mike B.Jun 7, 2018

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin has the potential to become an all-time great, but in order to do that, he has to improve his game.

"Blake the Great" is one of the NBA's most exciting players as he possesses the ability to bring crowds to their feet night-in and night-out with his thunderous dunks and crazy leaping ability.

The former Oklahoma Sooner has put together two spectacular seasons in the Association thus far. His resume includes a Rookie of the Year Award, two All-Star games, and a spot on the All-NBA Second Team.

In addition, Griffin has averaged 21.7 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for his career, and is the main reason people can no longer make fun of the Clippers franchise.

Here's a look at five things he should work on to become a future MVP candidate.

Three-Point Shooting

1 of 5

Three-point shooting? Seriously?

Hey, it works for other power forwards like Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Love, doesn't it?

Expanding his range beyond the arc would only make Griffin better, since many big men don't want to go out that far to play D.

For his career, Griffin is 9-for-41 from downtown, including his one attempt in this year's playoffs.

Mid-Range Jump Shooting

One reason Karl Malone is the NBA's second all-time leading scorer is due to his lethal mid-range jumpshot.

If Griffin can develop a consistent 15-foot jumper like Malone used to have, he'll be simply unstoppable.

Shot-Blocking

3 of 5

Griffin is far from an elite shot-blocker, which is pretty odd since he's 6'10" and extremely athletic. It must be a timing thing.

He has averaged just 0.6 blocks per game for his career.

Defense is truly one of Griffin's most glaring weaknesses.

Post Game

4 of 5

There's no doubt about it, Griffin's post game needs quite a bit of work.

He should call up Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon immediately and demand some lessons.

Back in the day, Olajuwon would give defenders fits all the time with his plethora of post moves.

Could you imagine Griffin developing the famous "Dream Shake" to his arsenal?

Free-Throw Shooting

5 of 5

Griffin is a fabulous dunker and is blessed with athleticism. He can score, rebound and pass as well.

However, when it comes to his free-throw shooting, there really aren't a lot of positive things you can say.

He shot a lousy .521 percent from the foul line this season, second-worst behind Dwight Howard. Shaquille O'Neal, one of the worst free throw shooters in NBA history, actually had a better percentage in 10 of his seasons.

Griffin attempted 7.1 free throws per game this season, the sixth-highest mark in the league. He's going to have to be able to come through whenever he gets to the line.
