How the Indiana Pacers Could Become the NBA's Next Dynasty

Matt ShetlerJun 1, 2018

When you look at up-and-coming NBA teams with very bright futures, it's hard not to like what is going on in Indiana right now.

No team in the NBA can have as bright a future as the Pacers to the point that if the Pacers do everything right in the next couple of years, we could be talking potential dynasty in Indiana. Here's a look at how they can become that good.

Now I know using the word dynasty is a stretch considering this current Pacers team has one playoff series win and one victory over the Miami Heat, but the building blocks are certainly there for this team to become great and win multiple championships.

Future stars like Paul George, Danny Granger and Roy Hibbert will only continue to get better and there's an opportunity for Indiana to swing for the fences and fill out the remaining pieces.

The Pacers are in better financial shape going forward than pretty much any team in the NBA.

Heading into next season, Indiana has only $36.3 million dollars on the books which gives Larry Bird plenty of room to add quality players.

The first move is locking up restricted free agents Hibbert and George Hill. Those two added to George, Granger, David West and Darren Collision gives Indiana a solid six players.

The Pacers can add another piece come draft day as June's draft is very deep in talent, but for the Pacers to eventually get to championship level, they must hit a home run or two in free agency.

That doesn't have to be this season as the upcoming free agent class isn't the strongest one of recent memory, but although it's doubtful it will work, they do have the money to throw at Deron Williams.

That's hitting a home run right there and would allow Indiana to move a guy like Collison for additional pieces or draft picks.

But even small moves can help this Indiana team greatly.

One move would be targeting a guy like Steve Novak as Indiana could use some more shooting. The Pacers are only shooting 29 percent from behind the arc this postseason, so slightly overpaying for the NBA's leading three-point shooter wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

However all eyes in Indiana should be focused on the 2013 free agent class as it's loaded with the likes of Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Monta Ellis, Josh Smith, Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap and plenty of others.

It's too hard to single out a target or two for Indiana because several options will be picked up along the way and several restricted free agents will remain with their current clubs. The opportunity is there however for the Pacers to add two major players within the next two offseasons.

It's hard to predict the future, especially in the NBA, but Indiana has the opportunity to swing for the fences.

If the Pacers hit a couple of home runs, this team could be very difficult to beat for a very long time.
