Darrelle Revis Should Worry About the New York Jets, Not Bill Belichick

Erik FrenzJun 7, 2018

The shocking thing isn't that Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis took to the media to air his grievances against Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady (only if you're shocked that the media asked the question).

What's shocking is that after all the talking the Jets did last year, and with all the media scrutiny that continues to swirl around Florham Park, that they still haven't learned their lesson.

Revis' Thursday trash talk can be summed up in three words: Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

He started off by commenting on his now-infamous moment on ESPN's First Take in which he called Belichick a "jerk," and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News pulled the quotes from the locker room:

"

I feel that people let him slide when he says his smart remarks (on) certain things. He says comments about us like he never coached here…. He did. That’s just how I felt. So they told me to sum it up. I gave one word. He can take it how he wants. He can say (whatever) he wants to say back.

"

I'm willing to bet Belichick won't say anything back. Do I have any takers? Belichick hates giving his opponents bulletin board material—he even benched Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker for the first series of a playoff game against the Jets for doing just that.

So, what's the point of Revis' comments?

Do the comments give the Jets something to rally around at practice? Do they give credence to Revis' role as a leader in the Jets locker room?

Or do they just serve as a reminder that three years after Rex Ryan guaranteed a Super Bowl, the Jets are still the little brother in the AFC East?

At least we learned why he holds such animosity toward the Patriots head coach. It all stems from some less-than-appropriate comments Belichick made to his son following a big November win for the Patriots on the road after losing two straight games.

"

I don’t know… Talking about the best defense… they can suck my— … All that stuff. That’s just ignorant. Why go there? You won fair and square. Hey, we shook your hand after the game. ...But when you start saying stuff like that… no… it gets too personal.

...Bart (Scott) said his thing…'Can’t Wait' thing. But he still didn’t disrespect. He just said that they feel like they’re better than us. That’s okay. He didn’t say go suck—go do this or go do that. It’s personal. It’s disrespectful.

"

Give Revis and the Jets credit for sticking to their guns and not backing down from the brash boldness that has defined them in recent years, but in a division that still features the heavily favored Patriots and the upstart Bills, the Jets need to prove they're playoff caliber again.

Until then, the Patriots will likely do what they always do: "Ignore the noise."
