Mayweather vs. Cotto: Why You Shouldn't Expect Rematch of Epic Fight
I'm sure I'm just one of many when I say I want to see Floyd Mayweather versus Miguel Cotto again, but I know that probably isn't going to happen.
Besides the replay of Saturday's epic title fight, don't expect to see these two fighters in the same ring again, despite the countless bags of money they would bring in should they square off.
Here's why.
Mayweather won't risk it
Miguel Cotto landed a whole lot of punches for Money being the best defensive fighter ever. Don't get me wrong, Mayweather was still clearly the better fighter on Saturday night (he put forth another epic performance to grab the win), but this was the closest anyone has come to beating him.
This was the first time in a long time Pretty Boy hasn't had such a pretty face at the end of a fight.
Do you think Mayweather would put his undefeated record on the line against a guy who clearly has him figured out?
Nope.
It's not necessarily that he's "scared," either. More that he is smart, actually. Mayweather beat Cotto convincingly. He has nothing to prove, no matter how much fans might want it.
Cotto has other options
After putting up one of the best fights of the year on Saturday, everyone will want to fight Miguel Cotto. It's clear now that he can give a show, and he'll easily bring in the PPV money as the main attraction.
Whether it's a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, a bout with the up-and-coming star Canelo Alvarez, or a move to middleweight to take on Sergio Martinez, Cotto will undoubtedly have some big options for his next fight.
There's no reason for him to wait around for Mayweather to get released from jail and then search around for another opponent. Cotto is a hot name right now. He stands to make a lot of money if he schedules a new fight in quick fashion.
