Saul Alvarez vs. Shane Mosley: Preview, Start Time, Live Streaming and Schedule
Shane Mosley will be looking to pick up his first win since 2009 when he battles rising star Saul Alvarez on Saturday night. "Canelo" enters the bout as a heavy favorite, but can't overlook a savvy veteran like Mosley, who has battled many of the sport's biggest names.
"Sugar Shane" has gone 0-2-1 in his last three fights with losses to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. While he was able to go the distance against both superstars, it never seemed like he held the upper hand.
On the other hand, Alvarez has gone undefeated in 40 fights since turning pro in 2005. He beat Kermit Cintron back in November, but has never gone up against somebody that can match Mosley's résumé. So it should be a good test for him.
Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
When: Saturday, May 5 on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto card
Watch: HBO PPV and HBO GO
Alvarez's Keys to Victory
A majority of Alvarez's have come via knockout, but it will be important for him to exercise patience against Mosley. Since the American was able to hold his own for 12 rounds against the two best boxers on the planet, Alvarez can't afford to believe he'll score a quick knockout.
He needs to take a more conservative approach than he usually would, which will decrease the number of counterattacking chances for Mosley. If Alvarez spreads out his offensive attacks nicely, it should eventually wear down his older foe.
This represents the biggest career opportunity to date for Alvarez, so there will undoubtedly be butterflies before the bell rings. He must settle in quickly and stick to his game plan. If he does, he'll have the clear advantage.
Mosley's Keys to Victory
Mosley faces the same issues any boxer has when going up against somebody 19 years younger than them. He won't be able to match Alvarez's quickness, so he'll have rely on his experience to help guide him through the fight.
There shouldn't be any shortage of motivation for Mosley. He's been written off by most as an over-the-hill star, but a victory on Saturday will change that perception and earn him a couple more marquee fights before he calls it quits, if he wants them.
He has to attack Alvarez as much as possible to keep him from controlling the pace. If Mosley can gain an early edge, he's proven capable of playing solid defense to hold a lead. That gives him a reasonable chance to pull off the upset.
What They Are Saying
Alvarez isn't lacking in the confidence department heading into the biggest fight of his career, according to FOX Sports:
"I am proud of what I have accomplished so far, and I will be proud to win on May 5. I’ve heard some people ask, "Well what if you don’t win?" The truth is that isn’t an option to me. I don’t fathom any situation where I don’t win; that’s really it. But I know it won’t be easy, and I embrace the challenge whole-heartedly.
"
Andreas Hale of FightNews.com passed along conference call comments from Mosley, who still believes in himself:
"It’s about pride. All of the victories were in the past. This is a young champion I’m fighting. He has a belt that I want. We both have our ideas of what we want to do. I want to win the fight and go on to bigger and better things….I see myself not as an old warrior but a young killer. I don’t buy into the 40-year-old thing.
"
Prediction
This fight has a real opportunity to serve as Alvarez's coming-out party. Even though Mosley hasn't been winning lately, he's still a marquee name with several big wins under his belt. Look for Alvarez to take advantage of the chance and emerge victorious.
Alvarez by unanimous decision.
