Marquez vs. Fedchenko: Dominant Display Sets Up Pacquiao-Marquez IV
We knew it was coming. It was only a matter of time before Juan Manuel Marquez would thoroughly dominate Ukrainian challenger Sergey Fedchenko and set up a potential fourth bout with Manny Pacquiao.
Fedchenko had the idea early on, using jabs and defense to stay in the fight, but he began to wear down as Marquez used fluid, powerful combinations to batter him until he won via unanimous decision.
Marquez, of course, has been battling for a fourth fight with Pacquiao after many felt he got robbed against the eight-division world champion in November. The 38-year-old still looks remarkably young in the ring, and his technique and warrior's mentality give him a shot of upsetting Pacquiao.
While Pacquiao landed more punches in Pacquiao-Marquez III, Marquez had momentum and his punches created more impact. Watching the fight frankly overshadowed the CompuBox stats. If there were ever a fight Marquez should have won against Pacquiao, it was the fight in November.
So, the question becomes, if there is a Pacquiao-Marquez IV, should Pacquiao be wary?
I believe he should be. His last two fights haven't looked particularly impressive. You expected him to dominate the older Shane Mosley after what Floyd Mayweather Jr. did and his bout against Marquez was much closer than most of the boxing world expected.
Marquez, Mexico's pride and glory, is soaring right now in what should be the twilight of his career, while Pacquiao appears to be slowing. This is the perfect time for Marquez to go out as one of the few men who ever beat Pacquiao and frankly, Marquez deserves it. He's not only a magnificent boxer, he's become a model boxing can be proud of, in a boxing world that has become more interested in hype and flash.
But the important thing is that there should be a Pacquiao-Marquez IV. Watching these two go at it throughout the years has been a pleasure for boxing fans everywhere and they have both become ambassadors of the sport in a sense. If we can't have Pacquiao-Mayweather, Pacquiao-Marquez is one of the few fights that won't leave us relatively disappointed.
Marquez has done what he's needed to do to touch gloves with Pacquiao again. He deserves another chance against his longtime rival.
