Boston Bruins: Five in a Row

Mark MarinoFeb 28, 2008

While the Boston Bruins made no moves by the trade deadline, they improved to a five-game winning streak in impressive fashion tonight, outscoring the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-1.

The Penguins made arguably the best acquisition in Marian Hossa, but he fell short tonight in his debut with the squad.

Now, I admit, I was a bit disappointed when the Black and Gold didn't make a legitimate offer for Hossa.  I was actually counting the days until I might see the elite winger in a Boston uniform.  But Jeremy Jacobs, Peter Chiarelli, and Claude Julien obviously decided to ride with what they've already got.

The Penguins didn't give up a whole heck of a lot to sign Hossa.  Personally, I would have exchanged Phil Kessell, Glen Murray, Manny Fernandez, and a draft pick to make the acquisition if I’d been in charge.

Then again, I guess that's why I observe, analyze, and write about the sport—and they get paid the big bucks to make the actual decisions.

The Bruins are obviously thinking about the future.  Last season they signed Marc Savard and Zdeno Chara to big time contracts, hoping for significant wins in '06-'07.   Well, those hopes really didn’t materialize.

I guess we're still trying to make up for that god-awful Joe Thornton trade.  Don't get me started....

Nonetheless, the Bruins have executed a five game winning streak—all wins against Eastern Conference opponents, to hold their No. 6 spot in the playoff run.

With Patrice Bergeron skating and practicing again, the B's could make a legit run in the playoffs this year.

If it all ended today, the Bruins would face Carolina in the first round.  And for Boston fans, that's a good thing.  Anyone but the Habs, aye?

Boston made no major moves this year, flying under the radar.  Everyone is talking about trades in Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Washington.

Obviously the powers that be in Boston are content with the squad as is.  And if the B's can hold onto that No. 6 seed, they can certainly go far.

Stanley Cup this year?  Probably not.  In the next three years?  For sure.
