Masters Standings 2012: Rory McIlroy and Stars Who'll Keep Rolling on Moving Day
Several big-name players started to charge up the leaderboard on Friday, which sets them up nicely to make a run toward the green jacket. Saturday, known as Moving Day, will start to separate the contenders from the pretenders at the year's first major.
Here are three players who handled Augusta quite well in the second round and should carry that momentum into Round 3. For a full look at the current scores, check out the tournament's official site.
Sergio Garcia
The Spanish star continues to search for his first major championship, and he has given himself a chance to make it happen this week. After starting the day at even par, he reached five-under par before dropping a shot on the final hole.
He's been playing some well-rounded golf all season, so it's not a big surprise to see him in contention. When he's knocking down putts like he has been lately, he still has enough firepower to keep up with the most talented fields.
Overcoming the mental hurdle of previous major failures will be tough, but he has to sense a breakthrough on the horizon. Another solid round on Saturday will give him the confidence he needs to play aggressive in the final round.
Rory McIlroy
After a shaky first day when it seemed like last year's collapse was weighing on his mind, McIlroy bounced back in a big way on Friday. He started striking the ball a lot more consistently, and it allowed him to finish at four-under despite a late bogey.
He's handled the pressure well, and that's allowed him to focus on getting his game in order. He's got a boatload of natural ability, so his score usually comes down to a few select shots that require touch. When he's in a rhythm, nobody in the world can match him right now.
It would be the ultimate redemption for him to win at his first time back to Augusta since the disappointment of 2011. Based on his second-round play, it's going to be difficult for anybody to keep up.
Fans have learned what to expect from Mickelson. He's going to take his fair share of chances throughout every round, and he'll be in contention when they pay off, like they did on Friday. His high-risk style makes him fun to watch.
Since nobody was able to develop any type of advantage over the rest of the field, he's still in contention even though he got off to such a slow start. A Moving Day charge will put him in perfect position to claim another green jacket.
He'll be one of the first marquee names to head out on the course, which gives him a chance to put some pressure on the leaders with a couple of early birdies.
