Jeremy Lin Injury: Knicks Must Stay Far Away from Stephon Marbury
The New York Knicks received some bad news yesterday when they found out that Jeremy Lin would be out six weeks with an injury, but Stephon Marbury is not the solution.
J.R. Smith played against the veteran in China, and said that Marbury was "in the best shape I'd seen him in." However, Marbury has given indication he does not have interest in returning to play for New York.
The truth is that the Knicks should have no interest in acquiring anyone at this stage, let alone another player with a big ego.
Former Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni had to leave his position because he could not control all of the big personalities in the locker room.
Now that the team has been playing well, adding a player would only cause more problems.
Instead, the Knicks should look internally for a replacement to Lin.
Baron Davis is finally up to game speed and has brought a veteran presence over the past week that has helped the team succeed.
After Davis, there are a number of talented guards that can handle the basketball.
Veteran Mike Bibby is the only other true point guard on the roster, but Iman Shumpert, Smith and Toney Douglas are all capable playing the position for short periods of time.
This will give interim coach Mike Woodson plenty of flexibility in the final month leading up to the playoffs.
Without Lin, the Knicks might also be improved defensively. The breakout player was good at many things, but there are better on-ball defenders on the roster.
Eighth place in the Eastern Conference is not an ideal spot, but it is better to be in the playoffs than out of it.
There is enough talent on this team that they will be a scary first-round opponent for anyone.
