New York Jets Officially Trade for Tim Tebow: Why It Is a Good Move

John NizinskiMar 21, 2012

Who could have imagined last season, when Tim Tebow was leading a 95-yard drive to defeat the New York Jets, that four months later, he would be a member of Gang Green?

It was initially reported by Fox Sports' Jay Glazer that the Jets have acquired Tebow and a seventh-round draft pick from the Denver Broncos for a fourth-round and sixth-round draft pick.

Tebow is probably the most polarizing figure in the NFL.  He will join the already polarizing Jets and Mark Sanchez.

However, with Sanchez as their starting quarterback, what purpose do they have for Tebow?

After some contract issues, the trade has officially gone through. Here is a look at why this trade is a good move for the Jets.

Locker Room Help

1 of 7

It is no mystery that the Jets ended last season with a fractured locker room. A team that was once believed to have a strong chemistry, fell apart.

Tim Tebow is often criticized for his ability on the field. However, he is always praised for being a good teammate and a good person overall.

Tebow can help gel the team back together. He can help boost morale and chemistry for the Jets.

Winning and Leadership

2 of 7

The one thing that Tim Tebow knows how to do is win. He is a winner and a competitor. Last season, Tebow took a 1-4 Denver Broncos team into the playoffs. From there, he even won a playoff game.

He may go about his business in an unconventional way, but the end result is mostly winning.

The Jets got a front-row seat for this last season. Tebow had a game-winning 95-yard drive on a Jets defense that completely shut him down all game.

Tebow can help instill a winning mentality in the Jets and bring some much-needed leadership.

Ground and Pound

The Jets were successful in Rex Ryan's first two seasons as head coach, when they ran a ground-and-pound style offense. Last season, they went away from that, and they struggled.

The Jets hired Tony Sparano as their new offensive coordinator and will go back to the ground-and-pound style.

Tim Tebow will help the ground-and-pound be more successful. Tebow can wear down a defense with his relentless attack on the ground. Alongside Shonn Greene, Tebow could help get the Jets back to what brought them success.

Wildcat Packages

4 of 7

The Jets have had a wildcat attack in their offensive scheme. They ran it with Brad Smith before he signed with the Buffalo Bills, and they had it intact for Joe McKnight and Jeremy Kurley.

Tim Tebow can give the Jets the best Wildcat offense they have ever had.

Tebow is often criticized for his inaccurate passing attack, but he is still a quarterback and a more accurate passer than McKnight and Kurley. When Tebow runs the Wildcat with the Jets, he can keep the defense guessing and unsure if he will throw, pitch or run the ball.

Tony Sparano is the former head coach of the Miami Dolphins. He helped bring the Wildcat offense to where it is today in the NFL. Sparano could have a field day with all of the different things he can do with Tebow in the Jets offense.

Motivation for Mark Sanchez

5 of 7

As the Jets seemed to collapse last season, an anonymous source claimed that Mark Sanchez lacked motivation. The Jets' backup quarterback was Mark Brunell, who was never truly a threat to take Sanchez's starting job.

Tim Tebow will help motivate Sanchez in two ways. First, Tebow will motivate him with his leadership and hard work. Secondly, Sanchez will also be motivated to avoid the circus and chaos that will come if he struggles.

The second that Sanchez makes a mistake, the "Tebowmania" will kick in and push for Tebow to replace him. Right off the bat, the Jets should make it clear that Tebow is not a backup quarterback but a specialist player.

This could help minimize the chaos that will come along with Tebow. If Sanchez wants to avoid all the pressure, he will have to perform up to high expectations.

Battle for New York

6 of 7

One thing the Jets have tried to do recently is not take a backseat to the New York Giants. It seemed as if they were climbing up to the same level as the Giants in New York; then the "G-Men" won the Super Bowl.

Attention quickly switched back to the Giants.

The acquisition of Tim Tebow gives the Jets a guaranteed back cover of the newspaper and helps bring the attention back to them. While having success is the most important thing in New York, trading for Tebow is pretty significant.

HBO's 'Hard Knocks'

7 of 7

If the Jets want to be the team on HBO's Hard Knocks again, they pretty much just locked that up. The Jets helped revolutionize the show, and HBO would be silly to not try and get them back on it.

Can you imagine Hard Knocks with Rex Ryan and Tim Tebow?

The Jets are loaded with personalities on their team, and this trade means that if they want to be on Hard Knocks again, they will be on Hard Knocks again.
