Derek Fisher: Why Veteran PG Would Be Better off with Miami Heat

Sam R. QuinnJun 4, 2018

Derek Fisher should abandon his negotiations with the Oklahoma City Thunder and try to join the Miami Heat.

According to ESPN, Fisher is in "advanced negotiations" with the Thunder after he cleared waivers.

Fisher is in the twilight of his career, and if he wants to win another championship before he retires, he needs to take his talents to South Beach.

Reason No. 1: LeBron James

Bron-Bron's going to get a championship eventually. You can knock him all you want, but he's having one of the best statistical seasons of all time.

Seriously, look it up. It's better than Magic Johnson's 1986 season. It's in the same neighborhood as Jordan's best years.

He's leaps and bounds ahead of his competition. He drives to the hoop with such ferocity and determination that nobody can stop him. He's shooting 54 percent from the field.

Pundits get on him for choking in the fourth quarter and not being able to get it done when it counts; but Fisher could help alleviate that problem.

Mr. "0.4" himself has played in 209 postseason games, ranks second all time in NBA Finals three-pointers made (43) and has the highest three-point field goal percentage in NBA Finals history (42.6 percent).

Reason No. 2: Less playing time in Oklahoma City

The Thunder have Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Reggie Jackson and Royal Ivey, who all get time at the guard spot.

Westbrook plays over 35 minutes a game. Harden plays 32. Jackson and Ivey both play 12.

It's hard to see Fisher getting much time on the floor with a guard corps like that, but maybe he will be content to spend most of his time on the bench as a mentor.

Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole are the only true point guards on the Heat bench, as well as the only ones who get significant playing time.

They're both under 25, too.

Fisher has lost a step, but watching a consummate professional take the floor could do wonders for the young Chalmers and Cole.

Reason No. 3: The Heat have a better shot at winning the title

This is a tough call but it's true.

While OKC leads the West by three-and-a-half games, it's easy to see their inexperience causing them to fail in the playoffs against battle-hardened teams like the Lakers, Mavericks and Spurs.

Durant and Westbrook have been playing out of their minds this season, as expected. However, in the 2011 playoffs, Westbrook tailed off a bit, shooting under 40 percent, while turning the ball over almost five times a game.

Miami is second in the East behind the Bulls, but the Heat are a better team head-to-head.

In the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals, James and company gave Derrick Rose fits, as Miami shut him down with tantalizing defense in the half-court game.

If you slow down Rose, you slow down the Bulls.

Fisher isn't signing with a team for the money, he's doing it because he wants to win.

Going by that sentiment, he should sign on to play with James, Bosh and Wade, as they have a better chance than any other team to win it all.
