NBA Rumors: Veteran Derek Fisher Would Be Ideal Fit with Young OKC Thunder
Well, the inevitable has happened.
Derek Fisher has received a buyout from the Houston Rockets and he's seeking a sixth championship.
So far, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat are seen as possible fits for Fisher.
Fisher has put the Bulls and Heat atop his wish list. The Bulls haven't expressed interest yet, per Marc Stein of ESPN. The Thunder and Spurs are reportedly considering signing Fisher.
You have to think Fisher would be a great fit for the Thunder. They're the favorites to get to the NBA Finals out of the Western Conference and they're still very young.
Fisher would provide leadership for the team and could help replace backup point guard Eric Maynor, who is out for the season with a torn ACL.
It's not that the Thunder absolutely need Fisher to win a championship this season. They have enough talent to do so on their own. But there's nothing like having a battle-tested veteran come off the bench and help your second squad.
Plus, imagine a Western Conference Finals between the Thunder and Fisher's old team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Don't tell me Fisher wouldn't be pumped for that.
The Thunder have three players 30 years of age or older: Nazr Mohammed, Nick Collison and Royal Ivey. But are any of these guys legitimate leaders? Compared to Fisher, they aren't in the same stratosphere.
Fisher has experience and he's been known to make clutch shots. As he showed with the Lakers, he's not a good option as a starter anymore.
But as a role player, he would be an ideal fit for the young Thunder.
When all is said and done, Fisher could ironically be the player who dooms the Lakers.
