2012 NBA Playoffs: 4 Reasons the Minnesota Timberwolves Won't Make It This Year

Lindsey YoungMar 19, 2012

When it comes to Timberwolves fans, I'm one of the biggest.

The Wolves have improved astronomically this season, creating excitement among fans and intrigue among critics.

Three weeks ago, I would have argued with just about anybody that Minnesota would wrestle its way into the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

Now, as much as it hurts me to say this, I no longer think the Timberwolves will make it past the regular season this year.

Here are four reasons why.

No. 1: Ricky Rubio out for Season with Torn Left ACL

1 of 5

Above all, the loss of rookie Ricky Rubio dims Minnesota's chances of making the playoffs.

The point guard tore his ACL in a contest against the LA Lakers on March 10. The injury happened with only 16.4 seconds remaining in the game, and although the play didn't look too serious initially, reports the next day confirmed that Rubio would be sidelined for the remainder for the season.

Prior to the injury, Rubio was averaging 8.2 APG and 10.6 PPG. Although replacement PG Luke Ridnour can statistically fill Rubio's shoes (Ridnour is averaging 13 points and nine assists per game), the game just runs smoother with Rubio at the helm.

At only 21 years old, Rubio exhibits a natural authority on the court, instinctively reading the floor and creating plays at a level above most veterans.

There's no doubt about it—without Rubio on the floor—Minnesota's shot at the postseason is a lot weaker.

No. 2: Wolves Suffering in Current 7-Game Road Trip

2 of 5

Tonight, the Timberwolves match up against the Golden State Warriors.

This is the fifth game on a grueling seven-game road trip for Minnesota, and Kevin Love and his squad hope to bounce back after three-straight losses to Utah, Los Angeles (Lakers) and Sacramento

Due to the losing streak, the Wolves have fallen to two games below the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, and Portland sits only a half game behind Minnesota.

Following tonight's game, the Wolves face two tough opponents in San Antonio and Oklahoma City to finish up the stint away from the Target Center.

They really can't afford to lose these games.

No. 3: Phoenix and Utah Winning Games

3 of 5

The Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz are two teams vying with Minnesota for that lucky No. 8 spot, and unfortunately for the Timberwolves, their opponents are winning games and gaining a foothold in the standings.

One game after Rubio's ACL injury, the Wolves stormed ahead and defeated Phoenix in a 127-122 battle. However, the excitement was short-lived; the Suns went on a three-game win streak while Minnesota lost just as many (including a loss to Utah).

No. 4: Inconsistent Bench

4 of 5

Rubio's injury changes everything, and at this point, it's absolutely crucial that the Timberwolves bench steps up.

While some games deliver outstanding performances from Minnesota's reserves, they aren't reliable.

Now that the trade deadline has passed, and Michael Beasley will stay in the Midwest; hopefully all distractions are removed. He can be a big scorer for the Wolves on any given night—if his attitude stays in check.

Guys like Anthony Randolph and Wayne Ellington are young athletes with strong potential, but their stats are decided game to game and don't show any real consistency. My hope is that extended playing time will begin to even things out, but it's too soon to tell.

Keeping My Fingers Crossed

More than anybody else, I hope that I'm wrong.

I hope that Minnesota kicks it into gear and pulls out a spot in the playoffs.

It's not looking hopeful, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed...
