Thrown from the Lakers, Where Will Derek Fisher Land?
If he lands anywhere at all. He's been traded by the Lakers, and now may be waived by the Rockets within a day or two, and it remains to be seen if he wishes to wait on top of a scrap heap.
This might be the odd instance where a guy goes from "starter" to "retired" overnight, a la Karl Malone. Derek Fisher simply isn't very good anymore, and hasn't been good for some time.
The Lakers seemed to be keeping him on as a thanks for old times, or at least as a stop-gap that they never got around to improving upon.
Fisher does have some league-wide cachet though, as evidenced by how basketball is actually happening this year (we could still be in the throes of a lockout had Union president Fisher not secured votes from the players).
It is possible that a team would like to lease his aura, as a leader, professional and all-around good locker room guy.
Here are three teams that could sign the recently waived guard:
Los Angeles Clippers: If LAC plans on keeping their locker room shuttered for protracted periods, they'll certainly need that "good locker room guy" quality. The Clippers are spinning their wheels, in so far as a boats can do that. Perhaps a mature presence could calm what ails them. Added bonus: Fish wouldn't have to move.
Boston Celtics: Why not make it a full-on convalescent home? Ainge seems content to move laterally as the ship sinks downwards. The C's have been known to employ elder statesmen, Rajon Rondo lacks a real back-up. So long Jermaine O'Neal, hello D-Fish?
Los Angeles Lakers (2012-2013): League rules do not allow Fisher to re-sign with the Lakers now that he's been waived. But on July 1st, 2012, the old veteran could come back in a supportive role. Hey, if Juwan Howard can play for Miami, anything is possible.
