Report: Mike D'Antoni Done as New York Knicks Head Coach
The Knicks have underachieved in a big way this season. The team has a huge payroll, and a high-priced coach. Stephen A. Smith said on SportsCenter today that "It is over" for coach D'Antoni in New York.
While no official decision has been made, it would appear the writing is on the wall. D'Antoni is working with Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire and still cannot find a way to win.
Jeremy Lin might have just prolonged the inevitable for D'Antoni. The team has not played well, and is not buying what D'Antoni is selling. There is no conceivable reason this team should be losing games. When that happens in the NBA, heads roll and it is usually not the players' heads.
The Knicks have not extended D'Antoni's deal, which is done at the end of the season. That alone would seem to indicate they will be looking for a new head coach.
The team is seven games behind division leader Philadelphia, and still has to play four more games against Chicago, Boston, and Miami. If they want to compete this year, the offense will need to get on track.
Phil Jackson usually gets the coaching bug after he sits out for a season. Could he possibly think of a return to the bench in New York? He does like coaching superstars, and would probably like the idea of turning Carmelo into an NBA Champion. There is no doubt that Knick fans would welcome him with open arms.
UPDATE: D'Antoni indeed resigned today as head coach of the Knicks.
