Manchester United: The Red Devils Are on Fire

Jeff HarbertFeb 25, 2008

Manchester United has once again shown they can not only bounce back from anything, but bounce back in style.

Question marks were raised over some of the players' performances after the derby defeat against Manchester City. But a draw against Lyon sandwiched by two drubbings over Arsenal and Newcastle demonstrated the Red Devil’s determination to make it a successful season.

The outstanding recent form of Darren Fletcher, the promising performances by Nani, and the return of Louis Saha are just a few reasons why Sir Alex has been beaming lately. His side has cut the gap between leaders Arsenal at the top of the Premier League to three points and looks more than capable of reclaiming their Premiership crown.

United’s defense has continued to provide a platform for the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, and Anderson to attack. Two goals apiece from Rooney and Ronaldo ensured it was another thrashing against Newcastle, but just as importantly, signified to the rest of the league that United do indeed mean business.

United’s FA Cup win over Arsenal has already taken its toll on the Gunners. Following their trouncing at Old Trafford, Arsene Wenger’s men are yet to win. A goalless draw against Milan in the Champions League was followed by a draw against Birmingham City in the league.

Sir Alex hoped the FA Cup fixture would have an impact on the title race and it seems his wishes may have been granted. Next up for Arsenal is Aston Villa, a team more than capable of hindering their title hopes.

As for United, they’ll look to continue their fine form by collecting another three points away at Fulham. It won’t be an easy game by any means for the Red Devils considering the Cottagers appear to be a side that will be fighting up to the last day to avoid the dreaded drop.

It did, after all, take a last minute solo goal from Christiano Ronaldo for United to earn all three points in the same fixture last season.

But if United continue playing the way they have been lately, Fulham won’t stand a chance. The Red Devils are still chasing three trophies, but their focus this weekend will be only on coming away with a win.
