Lakers Rumors: Ramon Sessions and 4 Point Guard Upgrades Available for Lakers

Josh BenjaminJun 7, 2018

Throughout the season, it's been clear that the Los Angeles Lakers need help at point guard.  Derek Fisher is a fine leader with some clutch shots on his resume, but he is clueless when it comes to running an offense and creating plays.

Today, Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld tweeted that the team was interested in Ramon Sessions of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who has been stuck playing backup to rookie sensation Kyrie Irving all year long.  Sessions is the type of point guard the Lakers need, one who penetrates the lane and finds the open man fairly well.

Yet there are some other options at the point who could easily help solve the Lakers' woes.

Ramon Sessions

Let's start with the man of the hour, Mr. Sessions himself. He's got good size for his position at 6'3" and does a great job of creating plays and limiting his turnovers.

Whereas Derek Fisher normally dumps the ball off to Kobe and lets him take over, Sessions would read the opposition's defensive scheme and then go from there. If the ball goes to Kobe, great. If it doesn't, great, because Kobe takes way too many shots anyway.

With his team-first approach, Sessions could be just what the doctor ordered for Kobe and Company.

Raymond Felton

Felton has been in a funk all year long playing for the Portland Trail Blazers, averaging just 10.3 points and 6.2 assists. However, don't be so quick to write him off as the solution for the Lakers. In his half-season with the New York Knicks, he proved that he was more than capable of running an offense.

Playing for Mike D'Antoni, Felton averaged 17.1 points and nine assists, as he had some great scoring targets to whom he could give the ball. Ken Berger of CBSsports.com reports that rival executives feel that Felton can be acquired for the cheap price of bench shooter Steve Blake, so the possibilities are endless in terms of what Felton could do with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum at his disposal.

Who knows? Maybe he could get Metta World Peace out of his funk as well.

Brandon Jennings

Just the other day, it was reported that the Milwaukee Bucks were potentially looking to trade Jennings, who is a free agent at season's end and has basically made it clear that he wants to play in a larger market.

You don't get a market much bigger than that of the Lakers, who have a humongous fanbase and a history that goes back decades.  The only potential red flag with Jennings is his ego, as he is definitely more of a scorer than a true point guard.

Yet, look at his previous five games. He has averaged 22.8 points and 7.2 assists per game, a far cry from his usual "give me the ball and let me shoot" ways.

On top of that, were Jennings to become a Laker, he'd be in an opposite situation as to his in Milwaukee right now, where he's basically carrying the team. In L.A., he'd have a fine mentor in Kobe Bryant, who could give him a few tips on how to be a good leader.

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports is reporting that Jennings won't be traded, but I won't believe that until the deadline has come and gone.

The Golden State Warriors are slowly falling out of the playoff race, and GM Larry Riley would be wise to dump some salary, starting with guard Monta Ellis. Ellis has not been linked to the Lakers recently, and he is definitely more of a scorer than a point man, averaging 21.9 points per game this year.

However, Ellis is also averaging a career-best six assists per contest this year, sharing the ball more rather than just shooting it. He's also built like a point guard at 6'3", 185 pounds, and his defense is phenomenal with a career average of 1.7 steals per game.

It's an unconventional option, but Ellis may be a better option at the Lakers' point than some people give him credit for. He's a fine player overall, and in the right environment, he could easily become more than just a scorer.
