NBA Rumors: Ranking Best Possible Destinations for Cavaliers PG Ramon Sessions

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Perhaps one of the most underrated players rumored to be on the market as the NBA trade deadline approaches is Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Ramon Sessions. With star rookie Kyrie Irving in the fold there isn't much room for Sessions, but he could bust out elsewhere.

Even while receiving far fewer minutes than he deserves, Sessions has been one of the team's most effective players this season, with averages of 10.3 points and 5.3 assists per game. Sessions has proven to be quite productive over the course of his career, and if given an opportunity he has great potential.

According to Bob Finnan of The News-Herald, the two teams rumored to be most interested in Sessions are the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks. Both would likely be great landing spots for Sessions, as he would get a chance to show what he can do ahead of free agency.

Here are the best possible destinations in which Sessions can land by the deadline.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers

Even though it would behoove the Cavs to deal Sessions prior to the deadline since he is likely to opt out prior to next season, Sessions wouldn't be too bad off if Cleveland decided to keep him around. While he is only getting about 25 minutes per game, he knows his place in the offense, he's acclimated to his teammates and it's clear that he can be a major contributor regardless of how much he's on the court.

As much as Sessions would probably like to have a chance to compete in the playoffs and showcase his skills in another locale, the remainder of this season is almost like an audition for him to start somewhere else next year. Even though his potential is capped a bit in Cleveland, most talent evaluators are likely impressed with what he has done. Because of that, it wouldn't hurt him to finish out the season with the Cavs.

2. Atlanta Hawks

One team with which Sessions could really thrive is the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks are already a sure-fire playoff team, so Sessions would get some extra games to prove his worth. On top of that, they have quite a few experienced players that Sessions could learn from and work well with. His playmaking abilities would definitely be put to good use by excellent offensive players like Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford when he returns from injury.

There wouldn't be too many negatives associated with Sessions going to Atlanta, but one thing that could hold him back is the presence of Jeff Teague. Although Teague isn't a traditional point guard as he averages just four assists per game, he is a good scorer and has started every game, so he will still get his minutes. When you consider that, Sessions would probably only be in a slightly better spot than he is in Cleveland right now.

1. Los Angeles Lakers

It is well documented that the Los Angeles Lakers need a point guard more than perhaps any other team in the league, so Sessions would be a natural fit. Los Angeles hasn't had a quality point guard in a long time, so Sessions' arrival would be welcomed. Kobe Bryant is charged with doing the vast majority of the ball handling, but Sessions would take a lot of pressure off of him by carrying the ball up the court and running offensive sets.

With Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol as offensive options, Sessions would likely be a passing dynamo, and his scoring would probably improve as well with so much of the defensive focus going elsewhere. Not only would Sessions almost certainly play a ton, but he would have a great opportunity to play deep into the playoffs. If all goes well, then he may even consider signing an extension to remain with the Lakers, so all signs point to Sessions and the Lakers being a great match.
