NBA Rumors: Dallas Mavericks Won't Give Lamar Odom Buyout
Lamar Odom may want out of Dallas, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban isn't having any of it.
A league executive reportedly told Hoops Authority on Tuesday that Odom wanted to join either the Boston Celtics or the New Jersey Nets.
But will a buyout actually happen?
Not likely.
Cuban has been adamant that the Mavericks won't buy out Odom's contract.
Cuban said on Monday, per ESPN, "It hasn't been discussed and we wouldn't do it. We think Lamar can be a huge plus for us."
There have also been rumors of Odom rejoining the Los Angeles Lakers, but that's probably one of the reasons the Mavericks won't let Odom go. The last thing you want to see if former player burn you in the playoffs.
Odom has had a rough first season with Dallas. He's averaging 7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 35 percent from the field in 21 minutes per game.
This is in stark contrast to his career averages of 14.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists. On top of that, Odom had the best season of his career in 2010-2011, winning Sixth Man of the Year honors.
But both Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle have made it clear that they are willing to see it through with Odom, regardless of his struggles and desire to leave Dallas.
However, that's not to say nothing will happen. If Odom begins to cause problems in the locker room and messes with team chemistry, the front office will have to take action. And if Odom really wants to leave, there's a definite possibility of him being a distraction.
Odom is currently away from the team for personal reasons. He's reportedly attending to his ill father in Los Angeles.
