2012 NFL Mock Draft: 5 Destinations for Combine Sensation Dontari Poe

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

Human beings that are 346 pounds aren't supposed to run the 40-yard dash in under five seconds. They aren't supposed to vertically leap almost 30 inches. And they definitely aren't supposed to have a 10-yard split of 1.7 seconds.

Memphis nose tackle Dontari Poe showed Monday at the 2012 NFL combine that what people his size "aren't supposed to do" doesn't apply to him.

He was a freak of nature during the defensive linemen workouts in the morning session, running the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.87 seconds (4.98 official) and working through the agility drills like a man almost half his size.

Oh, and don't forget, Poe also benched 225 pounds a combine-high 44 times.

There's no doubt he put his stamp on a first-round selection this April with the "buzz workout" of Monday.

But now that we've established Poe as a first-rounder, which teams might be the one to call his name in the first 32 picks? We've got a list of five teams that are great first-round fits for Poe:

Carolina Panthers: Poe's athleticism proved he can be a disruptive player in any front. Would the defensive-starved Panthers be willing to roll the dice to take Poe at No. 9 overall over the likes of Michael Brockers and Quinton Coples? Crazier things have happened.

Kansas City Chiefs: If the Chiefs don't think Poe is a reach at No. 11, this is a perfect fit. Poe would slide in as the nose tackle, giving the Chiefs one of the top 3-4 fronts in football. Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson and Poe are three young, disruptive players along the defensive line.

Dallas Cowboys: Taking Poe would allow the Cowboys to slide Jay Ratliff out to defensive end and then plug in Poe at the nose. If Dallas makes a move in free agency to acquire a cornerback and/or offensive line help, it could afford to take Poe at No. 14.

Tennessee Titans: There was once a physically dominating player that the Titans once possessed at defensive tackle. You may or may not remember that player as a younger, less obese Albert Haynesworth. Could the Titans be looking at a similarly imposing defensive line prospect in Poe?

Pittsburgh Steelers: Casey Hampton is aging, and the Steelers need a zero-technique for their 3-4 defense. Poe solves both problems. He could give Hampton plenty of breathers in 2012 while getting groomed to become the next line-achoring nose tackle for the Steelers defense.

Three bigger stretches but they still fit:

Houston Texans: The Texans defense took huge steps forward in year one under Wade Phillips. Placing Poe besides or opposite 2011 rookie J.J. Watt would give Houston another big piece to help in advancing through the AFC. However, I doubt Poe would fall past the Steelers at No. 24.

Denver Broncos: Denver's defense is mostly set on the edge with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil. What the Broncos need now is an imposing presence like Poe up the middle. The Broncos are likely to take a defensive tackle in the first round, so Poe makes sense if he got to No. 25.

Green Bay Packers: Poe's combine performance showed NFL decision-makers that he has the athleticism to play as a five-technique out wide. The Packers could throw a lot of beef on their defensive line with Poe, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett, but only if Poe were still available at No. 28.
